So rarely we get to meet the real heroes! I wonder if Mr. Kern ever got to shake hands with one of those wounded men, any one of whom could have been saved by his selflessness.

He did not, he never got to know who the young man he gave up his spot for was, or if he even lived.
None of us knew the full story until his funeral. (He died of a massive hemorrhage caused by a car accident in 97) He did say he spent the night hiding from enemy soldiers that were close enough to hear.
At his funeral, a member of the American Legion read a letter that came with his bronze star - which we didn't know he received either.
