Not to trying to get far off-topic here, but I've run across letters written to and from Senators and Reps in my kin's stuff, and they wrote, and they got written back and got representation.
That doesn't even really happen today. They'd get some bogus form letter in this day and age, and the politician would then do what the lobbyists want.
