CA Gov election: Does the Swalwell scandal actually increase Democrats’ chances in November?

California’s primary works differently … only the top two finishers advance, regardless of party. The Democrats’ biggest problem was having too many candidates splitting the vote while Hilton and Bianco ran basically unopposed on the right.

Now that Swalwell is done, his supporters have to pick someone else. That could actually push more voters behind one or two stronger Democrats instead of spreading them thin.

Honestly the Dems may have needed this. Too many cooks in the kitchen was their real problem going into June. If Swalwell dropping out triggers a few other long shots to call it quits too, Democrats could end up more united heading into November than they would have been if none of this ever happened.

Too many illegals voting in CA for the GOP to win.

I don’t think it will make a difference. Those who would have voted for swalwell will just vote for their next favorite dem candidate. At the end of the day, it’s going to be 2 candidates, I expect both of those candidates will be democrats.

I think it will make the Democrat brand more poisonous than it already was.

Swalwell was the strongest Democrat in that race.

Now, his voters will scatter to the other candidates, leaving two Republicans to win the "Jungle Primary," The General election will be to pick which Republican will run california.

Which is your choice?

I guess Swalwell does not believe that victims of sexual assault deserve to be heard after all.

California gubernatorial candidate Rep. Eric Swalwell, D-Calif., is facing backlash on social media after it was reported that his lawyer was sending cease and desist letters to Swalwell's accusers a day before multiple bombshell allegations were published Friday.

Swalwell, who once called on lawmakers to hear out women raising allegations against Supreme Court Justice nominee Brett Kavanaugh during his 2018 confirmation hearings and said they "deserve to be heard," is now being slammed for hypocrisy.

Do you foresee Swalwell's votes to spread evenly, among all the remaining candidates...without helping any single Democrat surge ahead of second-pkace Bianco...after Trump just endorsed Steve Hilton...?

And on top of this, you expect no Democrats to suspend their campaign before the primary?

The Democrats were never going to allow two Republicans to enter the general election. They would have forced lower tier Dems to drop out of the race before that happened.

I foresee it as my best guess.

Katie Porter had the most name recognition besides Swalwell, but she is tainted by her engineering of Swalwell's downfall. I also predict many of Swalwell's voters to just stay home.

I dint' say "no Democrats will suspend." I'm sure one or two will, for financial reasons.

But if you mean the Democrats will huddle up and say "gee, we better decide on one of us and the others drop out, otherwise a Republican will take the governor's mansion," I don't see that happening.

In 2016, that was the hope of the RNC to not have Trump win the primary. But each Republican candidate loved the idea as long as they were the pick, but would not go along with it for another candidate.

But maybe it will happen. The DNC has much greater control over Democrat politicians than the RNC does Republicans, so . . .

What prompted your bizarre expectation that many of Swalwell’s supporters will stay home instead of just choosing another Democrat?

That is 1000% true.

If that is going to happen, then we know the real reason Progs have jettisoned him.

There is a second thing going on that could help Democrats. Trump endorsed one of the 2 leading Republicans. That could fuel a move away from the other Republican and open up a spot for a Democrat as well.
