DRAFTEES VS. VOLUNTEERS:
25% (648,500) of total forces in country were draftees. (66% of U.S. armed forces members were drafted during WWII).

Draftees accounted for 30.4% (17,725) of combat deaths in Vietnam.

Reservists killed: 5,977

National Guard: 6,140 served: 101 died.

Total draftees (1965 - 73): 1,728,344.

Actually served in Vietnam: 38% Marine Corps Draft: 42,633.

Last man drafted: June 30, 1973.

I've posted on this board many times, the PROOF of what party started wars and what party finished them. Dems have in fact started more wars than repubs, which then ended them.

Well, look at all the "free country" proponents advocating conscription. That's an awful nice log jammed in your eye there.

Well, there's that.

I have never been comfortable with either position. Drafts are economically inefficient and intrude on liberty. I recognize there are times when intrusion on liberty is warranted. I am not sure this is one of them.
OTOH, universal conscription allows the inculcation of American values. There are hispanic ghetto dwellers who didnt even know what the Star Spangled Banner was until they joined the army. A bunch of young people have no idea what this country is about, or what the major institutions and culture relating to it are.

I am uncomfortable serving along side someone that doesn't want to be and is forced to be there.

Guys in WW1, WW2, Korea and Vietnam didnt necessarily feel that way.
That said, the quality of soldier in the all volunteer force is far better than under the draft.
