There is another class of coloured people who make a business of keeping the troubles, the wrongs, and the hardships of the Negro race before the public. Having learned that they are able to make a living out of their troubles, they have grown into the settled habit of advertising their wrongs — partly because they want sympathy and partly because it pays. Some of these people do not want the Negro to lose his grievances, because they do not want to lose their jobs.”

“I have learned that success is to be measured not so much by the position that one has reached in life as by the obstacles which he has overcome while trying to succeed.”

“I will permit no man to narrow and degrade my soul by making me hate him.“

“Among a large class, there seemed to be a dependence upon the government for every conceivable thing. The members of this class had little ambition to create a position for themselves, but wanted the federal officials to create one for them. How many times I wished then and have often wished since, that by some power of magic, I might remove the great bulk of these people into the country districts and plant them upon the soil – upon the solid and never deceptive foundation of Mother Nature, where all nations and races that have ever succeeded have gotten their start – a start that at first may be slow and toilsome, but one that nevertheless is real.”

In the years following the Civil War, Booker T. Washington devoted his life to helping blacks transition out of slavery and into freedom. While his ideas were never fully embraced in his time, today, more than a century later, they remain strikingly relevant.

Booker T Washington was among those who believed “go along to get along”
Don’t offend the whites and they will eventually take care of you.

His attitude kept blacks as second class citizens for another hundred years

Yeah, educating blacks in the South after the Civil War was REALLY POPULAR with da white folks!

It was as long as they didn’t compete with whites for jobs.

Washington played into maintaining Jim Crow status and not making waves.

Yeah, no way establishing a university and business organization in the South would trouble the KKK.

But you thinking freed slaves should have been violent shows how well your brain functions.

Booker T Washington would be rolling over in his grave. Spent his life actually trying to help African Americans, unlike 99% of the liberal talking heads out there today. All the work he did...just to have EIGHTEEN black people killed by their own race in ONE day on May 31st.

So Fredrick Douglas should have shot a Lincoln as they sat alone in the White House talking?

The black regiments in the Union Army should have shot General Grant?

The Red Tail pilots should have shot their white commander?

Rev King should have been blowing people up?

History remembers and honors those that take the high road of civilized behavior. And it frowns forever upon those that used violence and hate to push their agenda.

Dr. Washington was an outstanding leader of his people.

He was so right when he emphasized that they should find some needed skill in order to earn a living.

In his famous (or infamous) Atlanta speech, he emphasized that there was no need to rush social intermingling.

Booker T Washington made those comments during Jim Crow apartheid. That's how far off and dumb Washington was. Of course whites loved Washington because he didn't mind staying a punk and just taking the racism.

We did not get the right to vote, equal rights or equal opportunities because of the Booker T Washington plan. We did not get civil rights by doing what Booker T wanted done. This is what some black conservatives need to understand. Appeasing and going along with the whites who are racists hoping that changes them DOES NOT WORK! Washington’s plan did not work for one major reason. Ta-Nehisi Coates points this out in his 2009 article, “The Tragedy And Betrayal Of Booker T. Washington.”

“The dominant logic of the post-Reconstruction era held that the real problem wasn't white racists, but carpetbaggers and meddlers from up North who'd elevated illiterate blacks above their station. The white Southerner, presumably, had no existential objection to blacks, they just didn't want to live next door to them or have an illiterate and morally degenerate population electing their politicians. To this Washington, and much of black America, said Fine. Cease fire. You let us be, we'll let you be.”

His idea or plan did not work out because he dismissed one essential truth. Southern Whites hated blacks. They did not want blacks succeeding, all they wanted was for blacks to get out of the way and return to slavery. He seems to have paid no attention to how much southern whites did not like the fact blacks were free. Like a few of todays black conservatives, Washington looked past the rhetoric whites kept on speaking, the laws and polices they passed and thought that perhaps if we just accept things, one day we will gain our respect. Eventually if we do it this way, the racism will end. That if we just leave them alone and do what we do, if we just ignore the racism they won’t bother us and we won’t bother them.

To further understand how stupid those comments are, Washington lived when blacks did not have full constitutional rights. We could not vote in the south. We were overtly denied opportunities by law. No matter how loud republicans of today get with how they are the party of Lincoln, blacks then did not have much support from either the republican or democratic party. He was in the south where whites would sneak up on your family and do harm if you got too “uppity.” The night riders burned crosses in yards. The military was of no help to them. Neither were the police or the justice system. Lynching was legal. Whites were slaughtering blacks at will and Washington was watching it.

Frederick Douglass spoke a truth Washington was far to timid to hear.

And you wanted him to keep crying about Racism to make it as a token not as a free black man

Funny you should say that. Look at any democrat run urban areas. All the Gratifying jobs are done by white people and a couple of tokens while the blacks struggle on the plantation. You project your views often

I believe Booker T Washington was well meaning, but he played into the hands of racist policies and helped maintain Jim Crow for 100 years

He was held up as an example of a “good negro” and urged fellow blacks to just go along, be patient and it will all work out.

It didn’t work out and Jim Crow became a solidified social and political reality in the south.

Easy enough.....Plantations were vestiges of slavery where residents could be bought and sold, raped, beaten and demeaned.

Using that as comparable to a society helping those who are struggling is both offensive and racist.
