That during Lula’s successful presidency Brazilian GDP and capitalist production increased dramatically? I have no doubts. The polls universally put Lula ahead early on, though the race did get closer over time. Bolsonaro was the incumbent, with all the advantages incumbency provides in corrupt Brazil, and he also had the support of big money too. He paid a price for being President throughout the Covid crisis — which he did very little to ameliorate. He openly supported the 21-year military dictatorship in Brazil from 1964-1985. Did you?

By the way I have immediate family living in Chile and an American brother who travels the Continent on business and pays attention to these matters. Also I’ve followed events in Brazil as carefully as I could (not speaking Portuguese but only Spanish — now quite poorly). I’m also not your typical “lib.” I’ve also myself traveled many times in large and small countries of Central and Latin America.

There is zero reason to believe the election results were fraudulent. But it is certainly true the country is deeply divided, and large sections of the right have been turned into paranoid hysterics believing in “Liberal / Communist conspiracies” by the disgraceful “fear-mongering” of Bolsonaro.

But keep dreaming. I’m sure it is very comforting for you to believe in rightwing “Big Lies” from Trump … and now Bolsonaro too. It is a terrible thing to do, however, if you actually believe in democratic and inclusive government — and the peaceful transition of power that must go along with it.

But let’s look at it. The people claiming fraud don’t have any proof, or anything but wild theories. What is obvious to me is that they are abysmally bad losers.

I was talking to the wife not long ago. I told her the Internet was the best and worst thing that has happened. With it you can seek out new knowledge. See things that would be beyond your abilities otherwise. Access history, science, and entertainment that was unimaginable when we were younger.

It is the worst because you can find insanity in equal amounts. Bias and inaccurate information is reinforced instead of corrected. Truth and fact are trampled in favor of wild conspiracy theories. Ignorance is cheered while intelligence is demonized.

Imagine the Manhattan Project today. Voices raised in protest of so many Jews building a doomsday device. Nefarious plans “leaked” to certain people revealing the real plans. None of which would be true.

Excellent link and comment! We should all be clear that “Bolsonaro-ism,” (as popular as he is / was) represented a “throwback,” an open rejection of Constitutionalism and the idea of basic rights protected by law.

This concept of rights preserved and guaranteed by law was created in Brazil by compromises between broad & diverse parties and groups in society after the 21-year military dictatorship. The new Constitution of Brazil written in 1986 was an extraordinarily inclusive one, and most parts of it can be changed with only a 60% vote in Congress.

The present degeneration of Brazilian politics has complex causes, but we must remember that the wholesale rejection of Constitutionalism itself that Bolsonaro throughout his entire career embodied (shades of Trump’s one day talk of “terminating” our own basic law) … is something utterly unacceptable.

There are crucial reforms needed in Brazil, one of the most unequal and fractured major societies in the world. It is certainly unlikely that the alliance of the many quarreling political parties that allowed for Lula’s election will last or be able to rise to the occasion. But “Bolsonaroism” at least has suffered a major defeat after this massive if ineffective “citizen revolt,” and there is at least the possibility now that new emerging economic, social & political forces will find their way into bolstering healthier choices for the future.

Interesting. It’s a trend. If you like the results then the election was fair. If you don’t they cheated.

I don’t suppose you have a family history of mobsters in Las Vegas do you? They had a similar attitude. If the house won, the game was fair. If the player won, he must be cheating. Beat him. Kill him. Dump him in the desert.

People who won and would attract notice if they were killed were blacklisted. Prohibited from entering the casinos again. A gaming establishment that didn’t want professionals involved in gambling.
