If someone wants to believe in myths instead of science, that's fine by me. All I can do as a scientist is try to educate the public, but it ultimately comes down to if the individual is willing to face the reality of a cold, harsh, uncaring universe versus a fairy tale where there's a happy ending. It's all good, but the problem is the people who are fundamentalist of any stripe are very vocal and swing a big stick politically. They vote, they get on school boards, the go to Congress, and they appoint judges.
