That Slate article is bullshit. To assume the war would have escalated if we weren't gone by Aug 31 is totally unknown. But what IS known is that Biden wanted to pullout by the end of August so he could have a photo op on Sept 11 and declare he got our troops out of Afghanistan when previous presidents didn't. He wanted to avert attention away from the disaster on the southern border; everything he did was politically oriented. He ignored any analysis that differed from what he wanted to hear, if of course any such information was allowed to be presented to him in the 1st place.

It's pretty well known that Slate Magazine is a PR sock-puppet for the DNC. Now it appears that they're trying to convince Biden-supporters that he did no wrong. Many of them are so damned out of touch with reality, that they'll actually believe what Slate is telling them.

Both Biden and Milley did a piss poor job with Biden's being a little more excusable. But the truth is the withdraw would have never happened if Trump hadn't got the ball rolling.

And yet, as Milley also testified on Tuesday, he, the chiefs, Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin, and other military officers advised Biden to keep 2,500 U.S. troops in Afghanistan beyond the Aug. 31 deadline. The difference is that those troops wouldn’t be attached to any “military mission.” Instead, they would “transition” to a “diplomatic mission.”

Total lie and total B.S. This is the same sort of crap we are fed by the warmongers all the time. "Diplomatic". Will people never learn? Sadly probably not.
