Pope Leo XIV, who was chosen on Thursday, has a history of criticizing President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance's policies, according to posts on the X account of Robert Prevost, his name before he ascended to be head of the Catholic Church.

In February he reposted an article with the following headline: "JD Vance is wrong: Jesus doesn't ask us to rank our love for others."

In April, when Trump met with El Salvador President Nayib Bukele to discuss using a prison where alleged human rights abuses took place to jail suspected gang members flown from the United States, Prevost reposted a comment that included: "Do you not see the suffering? Is your conscience not disturbed?"
Reuters could not immediately verify who operated the account, which made its first post in 2011. Reuters reached out to the Vatican, the Roman Catholic Diocese of Chiclayo in Peru, where Prevost was based for years, and the Peruvian Embassy to the Holy See to confirm the authenticity of the account, which has the handle @drprevost
and includes posts calling for prayers for the late Pope Francis in his final months.

Pope Leo is expected to follow in the footsteps of Francis, a champion of the poor and of immigrants, who also had his differences with the Trump administration. Vance, who met with Francis at the Vatican the day before he died, played down those differences after the meeting, but they were substantial. Francis had called Trump's immigration policies a disgrace.

I grew up catholic. Went to catholic school. They did a great job of driving me away. Bad folk in there back then. Really bad.

The pope's brother had a blistering attack on the 0bama and Pelosi and the parents of trans kids. I find that encouraging.

The teaching of Jesus' Church is perfect. No mortal man should be able to drive you away from it if your faith is strong. You should give it another try. Pretty much every Catholic church experience is great now. We have five RC churches in our area. All of them are wonderful.

I cannot go back. I am active in my Lutheran church. Those nuns and priests back when I was young were ALL far from Christian.

I don't know what a militant Catholic fundamentalist is. The term doesn't make any sense. Is it someone who loves TOO much? Is it someone who acts TOO much like Jesus?

It's someone who will burn books in the name of God.

Someone who will kill..to save a soul.

Someone who will jail you for what you believe..or what you read...or what you say

Its someone who believes others must adhere to what they believe and also falsely believe it's on the extreme Christian militants who will inherit the kingdom of God when nothing could br further from God's teachings.

Again, I don't know what a Christian extremist militant is. Please explain. Militant implies violence. Christianity doesn't endorse violence. I don't know a single Catholic who believes only Catholics can go to Heaven. Maybe some other denominations believe only they can go to Heaven.

Oh. Well those people who bomb or kill aren't practicing Christians. They aren't following the teachings of Christ. So the ones who have problems with are decidedly non Christian. Non Christians are the ones you're worried about.

It was a certification process, so if there was a problem, then the certification could have been delayed until the problem was resolved.
