Beck: Springsteen's "Born in the USA" is Anti-American

I'll never understand the "appeal" of Bruce Springstein.

You can make a case that God might not like us all that much because he took Frank Zappa and John Lennon and stuck us with "the Boss" and the Rolling Stones.

____

Now wait one damn minute.

Lay off Keith's band pard...

this is news??

Springsteen has hated his own country for years now...........

His songs are appealing because they speak to the point of view of many Americans.

Some people can relate and some people can't.

but Frank's words are fighting words to Jillian.

Hell, dems fighting words to me! That's how Jill and I met (on the old, now defunct Springsteen board)...

I'd say Frank is the better at playing instruments, but Bruce the better song writer.

As for Frank's Indian drummer and band members, I don't know how you come up with that. Earnest Boom Boom Carter played licks on the song Born To Run that Max Weinberg says he can't replicate, David Sancious (sp?) was a classically trained pianist while Roy Bittan isn't far behind.

That being said, I like some Zappa music....

Zappa was creative and original and he loved to push the free speech envelope.

It certinly wasn't a positive song about America, which made the fact Reagan used it all the more amusing.

When Ronald Reagan used the song, he thought the chorus was some jingoistic assertion of nationalism. But the song is less about America, per se than it was about how badly we had treated our Vietnam Vets. He wrote it after reading Ron Kovics Born on the Fourth of July and Kovics and he became friends.

In any event, the song was from a time when we were treating our Vietnam Vets badly. They hadn't even had a parade yet. And Bruce worked his butt off to get them treated better.

To bad neither Springsteen or Zappa can hold a candle to Jimmy Buffett...

yeah.... cause margartaville is anyplace close to thunder road. :eusa_whistle:

Sadly, that is one of two songs people remember by Jimmy. There are so many better songs...

I have to say, my wife has the buffett box set and none of those can hold a candle to Thunder Road. so unless I'm missing an obscure song.....
