Bachmann signs The Family Lead pledge

Yep..I admired him for his racism.

Got it.

Why not - your positions are virtually identical to Orval Faubus, so it's natural to think that racism is what attracted you to Byrd.

Oh that's right, you claim "It not racist if against whites!"

ROFL, you just switched targets, your attitude, motive and rhetoric are the same old racist shit that democrats have been spewing since Andrew Jackson formed your shameful party.

Well you got the history wrong.

As well as just about everything else.

I grew up in the 60s. I've seen racism first hand.

You?

I also experienced the 60's. And I have headed an organization with a first priority of eliminating racism. As well as being an investigative reporter. Put all these things together and I believe I have arrived at some pertinent truths:

1. Most people are not racist in the sense that they marginalize, discriminate against, or cause or wish harm on any person. The war to end that form of racism has been fought and won. Our best choice now is to choose to stop fighting it.

2. Many people confuse racism with not being willing to marginalize, discriminate in favor of, or promote programs that cause harm to other people.

3. Nobody alive today in America has likely ever condoned or had anything to do with slavery or has likely ever been a slave.

4. There is unlikely to be any one of us who cannot point to some negative in their ancestry or earlier life and use that as an excuse for our shortcomings or as justiication for entitlements furnished by others.

5. The only way we will ever eradicate residual racism in this country is for ALL citizens to treat each other the same. So long as we get our knickers in a twist over certain words or images or symbolism or how something is expressed and shout RACISM and condemn the presumed RACIST, racism will remain alive and will be continually nurtured.

Ridiculous.

How old are you?

Old enough to have sufficient experience to support and add strength to my convictions. Perhaps each point is debatable, but I believe I can competently debate each one. I wonder if you can debate any one other than proclaiming it ridiculous?

Sure..lets go point by point.

1. Of course racism and bigotry still exist. Denying it is absurd. We see it almost on a daily basis from people who bring up illegal immigration, some really disgusting diatribes against people who practive the Muslim faith( Rep Peter King comes to mind), and even from people like Rand Paul..who argue that business owners should have a right to refuse service to people they don't like. And it exists in people who think the ought to be able to lord over what consenting adults do in the privacy of their own bedroom. Stop fighting it? We must remain vigilant against it rearing it ugly ahead again..which of late..it often does.

2. No. I think there is an Orwellian move to get rid of the very programs that have helped some groups in this country up out of a ditch they were put in by things like slavery and bigotry. And these very same groups that want to get rid of things like "Affirmative Action" cloak themselves in names like "Action group for Civil Rights".

3. Sure they have. And they wave the Stars and Bars proudly. There are hundreds of white supremist groups and militias in this country. Why they haven't been catagorized as terrorists is beyond me. The National Alliance had direct ties to Tim McVeigh.

4. Yeah but none have had the same consequences as Slavery and Jim Crow in this country. And to constantly shirk responsibility for that..is in itself almost as bad the crime of slavery and apartheid.

5. No. They way to get "rid" of racism..something that will not completely happen in my life time..is to point it out. And recently the racists..and those that want their votes have become very clever. They code talk.

Sallow, is it possible for someone who does not have 'white' skin to be a racist or a bigot?

The main part of the pledge is to have stronger families.
The point that was being made was slave families had very strong ties with each other Compared to what welfare has done to the black family of mother's and father's. Welfare has done more harm to blacks separating the father's, and making black womem raise their children alone without the father's support.

The Christmas holiday, the one break from work during the year for slaves, was anticipated with excitement because it allowed separated family members to meet and spend a week together. Despite the fragility of familial bonds under slavery, enslaved men and women considered themselves married, recognized their kin in the names they gave their children, looked after their relatives and friends in cases of separation, and protected each other as much as possible.

Slavery and servitude was virtually abolished between the 1770s and the 1830s in the Northern states. This meant that African Americans could legally establish families in the North. Black churches married couples, baptized their children, and recorded the new surnames that former slaves chose for themselves. Benevolent societies looked out for their members' welfare. Slaves who escaped from slaveholding areas were sheltered and moved to safer locations. Mothers and fathers both worked so their children could become educated. Although African American families in the North faced discrimination and poverty, and worried about being kidnapped by slave catchers, they had hope of maintaining their family ties.
Even though they were seperated they still kepted strong family ties.
That is what this pledge is, making families stronger and getting porn out of our young children's lives.

Of course it is

But if you are economically and socially disadvantaged your racism doesn't have the same impact

Based on prior comments you've made in this thread, I really don't think you believe that. Either that, or your paycheck comes from some sort of notion of keeping racism and bigotry alive and well. Life isn't good for the Jesse Jackson types if racism isn't a problem, isn't that the case? It pays for some to keep racism alive and well.

Yes, when government policies have caused the break up of familes (welfare) and our young children to grow up to fast because of the crap that is on TV, and video games, songs.

Your point is what? Quite frankly I could care less if a person is racist. Or bigotted. That's their deal. What matters is when they try to project that out of their personal realm. As in legislation.

Representative Peter Frank had a reprehensible commission to uncover the roots of muslim radicalism. It was a big waste of time and money. It also damaged relations with the muslim community at large.

And all these state "illegal immigration" initiatives are not only racist and bigotted..but Unconstitutional. And given that we are at a period of decline of illegal immigration in this country...due to "Big Government" doing something about it..it spotlights just how ingrained this bigotry is in the governments of some states.

You threw so many straw men and non sequiturs into your response on this one that you would have lost a formal debate on this one in your very first sentence. Individual or personal prejudices about ANYTHING (Italians, women, Republicans, Michelle Bachmann, accordian players etc. etc. etc.) are constitutionally protected in this country and yes, it will remain a fact of life. And it has zero to do with anything in Point One.

We have broken down all laws and almost all barriers to full equality and opportunities for all groups in this country and the non racists are now focusing on encouraging all people to take advantage of that. One form of racist continues to keep people marginalized and victimized because it is politically and economically advantageous to do so.

2. No. I think there is an Orwellian move to get rid of the very programs that have helped some groups in this country up out of a ditch they were put in by things like slavery and bigotry. And these very same groups that want to get rid of things like "Affirmative Action" cloak themselves in names like "Action group for Civil Rights".

There is definitely a move to stop marginalizing and victimizing certain groups as study after study has now shown well intentioned but poorly thought out programs to 'help' certain groups have had more negative than positive effect. I refer you to Thomas Sowell's Black Rednecks andWhite Liberals as an excellent starting point to fully undestand that.

3. Sure they have. And they wave the Stars and Bars proudly. There are hundreds of white supremist groups and militias in this country. Why they haven't been catagorized as terrorists is beyond me. The National Alliance had direct ties to Tim McVeigh.

More straw men and non sequiturs and not one shred of evidence for your point of view. While I see racists who would diminish somebody because of his/her race to be seriously wrong and sometimes hateful--there are more than one variety of these--and while I see white supremacy groups as usually disgusting, none of that is an endorsement of slavery. I have gone toe to toe with both racists and white supremacists--usually successfully I might add--but I have never known one of them who condoned slavery.

4. Yeah but none have had the same consequences as Slavery and Jim Crow in this country. And to constantly shirk responsibility for that..is in itself almost as bad the crime of slavery and apartheid.

Your opinion which is again unsupported. Which is not to diminish how deplorable and damaging slavery was or racial discrimination has been. But there is no more slavery or Jim Crow laws and therefore nobody has responsibility for those.
5. No. They way to get "rid" of racism..something that will not completely happen in my life time..is to point it out. And recently the racists..and those that want their votes have become very clever. They code talk.
Your comment is so vague and could be accused of so much prejudice and bigotry on your part that it speaks for itself.

What the heck are you going on about. Michele Bachmann just signed a pledge that includes some very bigotted comments. Some were so racist and bigotted they had to be taken out of the pledge. And I for one..have a huge issue with congressmembers signing pledges. They are legislators. The foundation of our legislation is the United States Constitution..not some silly pledge.

That Bachmann even sits in Congress is an insult to people that want good governance. She's a loon..and she's generally either cleaning up something she previously said..or saying something more outrageous then what she's said in the past. And for the most part..she says none of it really matters.

Really..that's a quality politician? And this is something you defend?

And then you go on to call me "overheated"?

Oh gosh.

Your comment is so vague and could be accused of so much prejudice and bigotry on your part that it speaks for itself.

and there ya go.

And Republicans now think that is a role of Government?

Yes, when government policies have caused the break up of familes (welfare) and our young children to grow up to fast because of the crap that is on TV, and video games, songs.

So your solution is throwing welfare families in the streets and Govt censorship?

No.
Helping the poor to get out of poverty and off welfare.Getting them to work and to go to night school for an even better job, and they pay for night school just like the rest of us have to do.
More family shows that have moms and dads being good parents and kids that actually mind their parents , getting violence out of video games and songs that are approprate for young children is not censorship.

Not only that but one of the best guarantees a child has to not be raised in poverty is to have a mother AND father in the home. And while it is certainly not true of all single parents, one of the biggest factors if not the biggest factor involved in child poverty in the USA is that the child has a single parent in the home.

If one is able to get past their prejudices re a Christian pespective and Michelle Bachmann, the truth of that should be instructive.
