So what? Ships are gigantic compared to aircraft interiors.
There always has been, and there will always be, out of shape, overweight people in all branches of the military. Some physical expectations may even be lowered to reflect society.
That isn't about that. It's about allowing someone who is out of range for the proper functioning of the equipment.

Some are.

I served on a submarine. They are not quite as roomy as you think.
I have plenty of friends who were bubbleheads. I have had the pleasure of being on several subs going back to the Fleet boats used in WWII.

I'm 6'1, no problem on any sub I have been on.

I don't fit in a WWII jeep!

For the most part they have headroom. I am 6'2" and left hair and skin on a few valves in the overhead. Passageways were narrow enough that it was tough to pass someone, even if you both turn sideways.

Yeah, on the Simon Bolivar the XO's stateroom door got stolen, so one of my friends had to be his door for several hours till the proper door was found. Not a big guy, but he made a damned good door! :113:

Must be a Bubblehead thing. My CO's door was stolen too. He got someone else's door.

But I have always wondered, where did they hide the door? No one ever confessed.

In the Bolivar they hid it in the shaft alley, how they hid it there I have no idea.

You sure that was a crew member? Maybe that person was ballast.
