Average teachers pay vs average pay.

The range of teacher compensation is very broad.

In my school district (white, suburban), most teachers make six figures in total, and will retire before reaching age 55. Howzatt?

One of my bowling buddies is a retired teacher from Baton Rouge. He got a $25/month increase in his pension a few months ago...his first increase in 8 years.

It makes no sense to talk about "average American public school teacher salaries." It's nothing but an invitation to argue.

National averages are a good place to start the conversation. Two things that are never considered as well.

1. Formal education is overrated.
2. Teachers overestimate their value to society.

Teachers earn more than those they have educated. So why do they complain about their pay?

Teachers: $66,000
Their graduates: $61,000
I am aware of teacher's pay in ID. The teacher I know is paid $48K/year with a masters. A supplemental funding levy was just denied by the voters. Now the parents are whining because class sizes are increasing due to teachers being laid off, extra-curriculars are being cut and bussing is being cut. Teachers are not paid commensurate to their value in many cases.

Teachers usually compare their pay with others based on their degrees, not on their actual value. There are degrees that pay much less than teachers earn. Anyway, more teachers leave because of dissatisfaction with the job than with the pay.

Teachers get very good benifits in low cost good insurance. Good pension plans second only to Fed workers. They also get more time off a year than almost any other profession.

I have 2 sisters who have retired and gave great pensions and medical because of it. Its more than average pay. You must ad in benifits.

Now some areas its VERY HARD TO BE A TEACHER. Some schools are in very violent areas. They should get combat pay.

Are you comparing the wages of those with advanced degrees to those with a HS Diploma?

Not here.

And I'd bet not most other red states either.

Teachers have degrees and often graduate degrees. Compare apples with apples next time.

BTW, I never even made $61,000 in my 21-year teaching career, and I know no one who ever did.

No, but the teachers are comparing their pay to those with similar or advanced degrees. They are also responsible for those who don't do well in school, including college. They gotta take the fat with the lean.

I found teachers were better in my High School than in College.
They were actually trained in how to teach

You may know Theoretical Physics but have no clue on how to teach it

Yes, social workers make less than teachers, and that is about it!

My daughter was a biology degree but works in logistics and makes over 6 figures. I had a master's degree and never made more than $55K teaching.

Average wage in Kansas is $51,000, fits the national average difference; teachers outearn their students.
Probably because we don't pay our teachers enough. Also, teachers are degreed college grads where as most Kansans are not, so they can be expected to out earn highschool grads.

I really dread the alternative
They should be realistic about their value. A person's practical education begins after graduation. That's why it's called "Commencement".

I think teachers earn a fair wage

They may make less than other degreed workers but 180 days a year is not 220 days a year
