Average teachers pay vs average pay.

Probably because we don't pay our teachers enough. Also, teachers are degreed college grads where as most Kansans are not, so they can be expected to out earn highschool grads.
On a national average college grads make about the same as average teachers do. So, claiming to earn less than similar degreed people is a false claim.

I think teachers earn a fair wage

They may make less than other degreed workers but 180 days a year is not 220 days a year
Non only that but only half of teachers have kids at home, while all their students have parents that have to support them, and they still outearn those parents.

I am aware of teacher's pay in ID. The teacher I know is paid $48K/year with a masters. A supplemental funding levy was just denied by the voters. Now the parents are whining because class sizes are increasing due to teachers being laid off, extra-curriculars are being cut and bussing is being cut. Teachers are not paid commensurate to their value in many cases.
That depends on how one calculates value. I judge value by results, not by effort or good intentions.

So you're in favor of paying teachers by the number of successful students they have? How would you determine those results? What factors would you use to come to your conclusion? IQ of the student, economic status, marital status of the parent, employment history of the parent, Bush's test scores? What would you use as a benchmark to determine what is fair compensation?

The general economy determines that. At present they are earning more than the people they educate, so they're doing pretty well. Their 'success' is determined by the success of their graduates in the workplace, not necessarily in the classroom. One would think that a teacher would be proud of a student who is very successful instead of whining about their pay being less than their grad.

Again, success is relative. Should a teacher that teaches Advanced Economics or Nuclear Physics be paid more than an English teacher? Should a high school history teacher be paid more than the third grade elementary school teacher that prepared the student for the HS class? You are painting with a broad brush that doesn't get to the details.

What is success?

If you turn an F Student into a C Student, isn’t that a success?
Compared to turning a B Student into an A Student?

Teachers earn more than those they have educated. So why do they complain about their pay?

Teachers: $66,000
Their graduates: $61,000
Do you have a link to support that data? The forum rules require it when making statements of fact.

People want better teachers. Then pay alot more and you'll get em. This nation is NOT about working hard for a pittance.

Hey, I know there are many good teachers out there, but the product being put out by our public schools cannot compete on the world market, so, they have no business demanding more money.

We just gave out teachers a7 percent raise and lower deductible insurance wise.

NOPE

Teachers earn 26.6% less than comparable college graduates

Are you talking about high school graduates?

Are you saying those with Bachelor's Degree at LEAST should not earn more than those with a high school diploma?

What ARE you saying?

Whatever anyone says, the market disagrees with you. Teachers are not only leaving in droves, but young people are not going into it.

Hence many states have had to increase teacher pay and it's still not working.

The quiet revolution underway in teaching is: we are no longer going to do all the things not related to teaching.

Parent gifts for Mother's Day? No. Making Christmas presents for parents at school? No. Treating each student for their birthday? No.

And frankly, I'm here for it. Society expects us to be concierges to their families while paying us next to nothing.

We are saying no.

Teachers get very good benifits in low cost good insurance. Good pension plans second only to Fed workers. They also get more time off a year than almost any other profession.

I have 2 sisters who have retired and gave great pensions and medical because of it. Its more than average pay. You must ad in benifits.

Now some areas its VERY HARD TO BE A TEACHER. Some schools are in very violent areas. They should get combat pay.

Um this is not even close to universally true. I pay through the nose for my benefits and have a high deductible. My pension is only half my ending salary.

Inform yourselves, people.

They should be realistic about their value. A person's practical education begins after graduation. That's why it's called "Commencement".

Yes, the market is saying pay teachers more. And many states are doing just that.

So, objectively, you make a poor point here.
