The boxes had numbers. Those numbers did not match the ballots. You cannot weigh what is not there. You are a fool.

They are the fools. As soon as they found a box that has fewer ballots than indicated, they should have immediately stopped opening boxes, and proceeded to WEIGH each box, tare away the weight of the box, and calculate the number of ballots in the box.
If that number didn't match the count on the outside, they could then use that as evidence of tampering, which could be introduced into court, where an in camera inspection could verify it.

But they instead broke all the seals of the ballots in their sole possession, handled or mishandled them. And then claimed they were 5 tons short.

Ballot counts don't match?

This reminds me of a situation I had at work. We got in several boxes of equipment, and after opening the first one, found it wasn't what we ordered. Instead of opening the rest of the boxes, we checked all the exterior designations to make sure they all had the same part number, and that the part number matched the invoice.
With a discrepancy in the contents of the first box, I told them, "don't open any more boxes" until we called the manufacturer/shipper.
Had we opened all the boxes they never would have taken any of them back. But because we documented the contents of the first box being wrong, they took all of them back.

Simple lesson.
