The only downside to 7.62/.308 is that after 100 yards, it starts dropping like a rock. A 150 grain .308 bullet fired with the standard muzzle velocity of M2 ball of ~2700 fps, and sighted in at 100 yards, drops almost 10" by the time it reaches 250 yards, and 16.77" by the time it reaches 300 yards.

Drop isn't that excessive with match grade rounds, still has to be accounted for. The M14 were tuned up and used a sniper rifle in Viet Nam and have since by UDT/Seals

Charlie was wearing a bullet proof vest....but since he wanted to keep it low profile it didn't have ceramic plates. Instead of absorbing the shot it ricocheted into his neck and back of his skull.

"Match grade" just means that they used a used a 173-grain boat-tail bullet instead of the flat base 150 grain bullet, as well as a more consistent manufacturing process. It still would be been ~2700 fps and dropped like a rock after 100 yards.

I'm not knocking a 30-06. I loaded and shot hundreds of rounds through my Springfield 03A3, trying to get a 1" group at 100 yards, and haven't been successful yet.

Mauser rifles do not come in this size for the ammunition. Not unless serious altercations were made to the rifle receiver.
30-06 is an American size....not European.

Simple barrel swap. Many Mausers were imported and then swapped to -06 for hunters.
