As Trump Cuts Science Budgets, Researchers Look Abroad. This Will Be The Death Knell Of The U.S. Economy.

BTW how much did Faucis "science" cost us after all was said and done?

According to the National Postdoctoral Association, an advocacy organization, there are about 72,000 postdocs in the U.S., nearly 60 percent of them from outside the country. Many — both U.S. and foreign-born — are looking abroad as research funding is hit, said Thomas Kimbis, chief executive of the association.

Foreign-born postdocs will face uncertainty when their visas end, he said, making them more likely to start searching immediately for jobs abroad.

“We want them to be able to stay in the U.S. … We need them, and they’re giving us a strategic advantage,” Kimbis said.

Of course , let's make America dumber , more narrow-minded and poorer all at the same time. trump really knows how to bankrupt everything.

Or how about we focus on developing American scientists. Why should the US taxpayers continue to pick up the tab on educating scientists and research benefitting other countries?

It does benefit the U.S. That's why these foreign-born scientists get green cards and work and live here for years.

And you can't "develop" American scientists when Trump is freezing Federal funding for scientific research. You make no sense.

I share your concern for the consequences of firing scientists

There is no easy answer to this question

For instance do you support our ever increasing budget deficit?

Isnt our fiscal future just as important as science?
Science is critically important but you're right that we cannot continue spending trillions more than we take in and remain solvent as a nation.

One of Trump's campaign promises made/kept was to start eliminating all unnecessary, inefficient, ineffective spending.

No doubt a small number of bonafide research grants might have gotten caught up in the purge. But but for the most part, the vast majority of grants were eliminated because a huge amount of the money was going for administrative and other indirect spending and/or for unconscionable studies that in no way would contribute anything important for the American people.

This article is dated 2018. But it gives some great examples of things the U.S. taxpayer should not be on the hook for:

Millions of dollars spent on LGBTQX+ studies including one to study affect of COVID on that particular group. How much allocated to study affect of COVID on America's school children? Zero.

Just because something is labeled 'scientific' doesn't mean it is actual science or that it is beneficial to the U.S. citizens in any way.

There are a number of grants on this list that no doubt were classified as 'scientific research':

President Trump's initiative to stop college, universities et al from bleeding off the lion's share of grant money for so-called 'overhead' i.e. indirect costs by limiting that to 15% of the grant money awarded was long overdue. Of course another corrupt activist judge has blocked that for now, but it is a good start.

If other countries want to hire so-called 'scientists' who have been doing bogus research, I say great. They're welcome to them. We do not need people like that receiving our tax dollars.

The science in our federal budget is a very small part. Eliminate the subsidies for fossil fuels, and you can easily cover the cost of scientific research.

But the Trumpanzees don't give a damn if we fall behind China and Europe in scientific research. Their calling card is stupidity and willful ignorance. They will be proud of our third world status.

Several hundred thousand, let alone a million dollars is a lot of money to a lot of us. A billion is an unimaginable fortune for the vast majority of Americans.

I prefer a government who cares about that and is unwilling to waste hard earned tax dollars of its citizens on ridiculous bogus research labeled 'scientific research.' No matter how small a percentage of the overall budget.

As the late great Everett Dirksen is oft quoted as saying, "A billion here, a billion there and pretty soon you're talking about real money."

Again just because the title of a grant says "Scientific" or that is how a grant allocation is classified in many many cases has nothing whatsoever to do with actual science. Certainly what grant recipients bleed off for other things has nothing to do with actual science.

Don't you want your government to be careful with the taxes you pay and make sure you actually get value for the money it allocates?

Their approach is "you need us more than we need you". So they'll just let our best people leave and say that we don't need them, either. They're just commies, anyway. They don't think like a Trumpsters, so they can just go.

Their world is terribly small and insulated, and now that's the way it's going to be for America, too.

Many stay here. We get their smartest and when they’re finished often realize they’ll do better here. Besides, we aren’t picking up any tab. Most foreign students pay full freight, allowing Americans to get scholarships.

Trump and Republicans are trying to add 4 trillion to the deficit. Apparently that isn't an issue.

I can, they

That’s literally what your link said

Did you not read it?
It wasn't just about one guy, like your trolling post made it out to be.

But you can't address the main issue.....that Trump's scientific funding freeze will be a disaster for this country.

You haven't received your bullshit right wing talking points to "address" this yet.
