Artificial intelligence could replace humans in four key industries and leave billions without jobs, expert reveals

Based on how insufferable automated customer service chat and telephone systems are, I am not going to bet the farm on AI quite yet. Sure it may be able to kick my ass in chess, but it sure seems unable to get me to the right department let alone to answer the right questions

It can do a fine job of manufacturing almost everything you use in your life. And do it cheaper and safer than manufacturing with employees.

Automation is not the same thing as artificial intelligence and if what you say were true, we would see legions of AI factories. We don't for a reason.

If you want to see them as separate, that works too. AI, in conjunction with automation will cost us millions of jobs.

The fact is that 99+% of coders suck at what they do and we don't need 95% of the coders out there; we never have.
Anyone who can't Cut & Paste and modify code is a talentless moron.
BTW, the Board of Directors of MNCs think coders are janitors and are starting to demand that most get laid off anyway,
yeah, every 20 years or so, maybe shorter timespans than that, it's time to play janitor for the mangerial ranks, and lay off the useless parts of their international workforces.
it's a fact of life.
but : people who do get laid off, can easily find jobs in other almost-as-equally-boring tasks, with just a course.
the trick here is to LEAVE ON YOUR OWN, **BEFORE YOU END UP IN A MENTAL BURNOUT SICKNESS SITUATION**.
because that can be a really long term problem, a mental burnout.
it was for me.

Commercial automation of businesses has used more and more advanced computers. AI is pretty much the ultimate advanced computer.

In time they will replace the need for most of the employees. At which point socialism will be about the only option.

lol. I'm not kidding. :)
Chat GPT AI can write malware if you know how to trick it.

Yeah, very dangerous stupid AI! Just watch the video down below. That's just one American.( I think many computer geeks around the globe know how to fool AI) :)

so do many smart people..
that means any engineer can..
and any smart criminal can too, with just a little work 'figuring it out' :(

i need at least a coffee and 5 more rollie cigarettes before i read the rest of the replies in this thread, folks...

i just slept my 2nd set of sleep hours for the day (another session of 4 hours, which was *great*)..

this whole psychiatric 'no coffee before 11am' routine does help to push one into a 2nd round of sleep, when you wake up at 02:30am ;)

Since I retired I have reverted to my natural sleep pattern of 2 sleep sessions of between 3 and 4 hours each. Once you get used to, it is great. I get plenty done. Plus I get the house when it is quiet and I can focus better. And coffee...

THIS. This is exactly where we need to be asking not CAN we implement these advances in techtbut SHOULD we implement these advancements in technology.

For far too long we have simply assumed that every technological advancement thst comes along is a wonderful thing which awe ought to embrace and begin using immediately, without any thought about what the consequences for our lives and our society would be. It’s time we start looking at what we SHOULD be doing instigated what we CAN do. Are these technologies really in the best interest of our citizens and our society? We really need to think about that before we blindly accept these pretty new toys.

In a capitalistic society, the gov't has no place deciding that. At all.

As for benefits, the automation will remove deaths and injuries from production. It will produce more for less.

That is also why it will happen. If you automate your business, you can produce more for a lower cost. Your competition will have to do the same in order to survive.

I agree that Government has no role in that decision, but WE as the people in Society need to make the decision on whether the increases in productivity are worth the loss of jobs and other Societal impacts.

Wonderful, but at what cost? How many jobs lost? How many lives destroyed? How much more of a drain on Society’s assets to support them?

Only if WE buy the fruits of the automated labor rather than the human labor. Yes, there will be a price to pay (literally), but I’d rather pay an additional cost at the register than to see my taxes increase to pay these folks not to work.

And you will be welcome to do that. I am sure there will be promotions for "Human Built" products. But we have already lost more jobs to automation than to out-sourcing overseas. And there have been few, if any, complaints.

I’m all for bringing those jobs back as well. I don’t want the Government involved in these issues; but we may reach a point where that is necessary.

If outsourcing and automation reach a point where they are severely impacting our nation there may need to be some legislation forcing these jobs back to the USA, then back to human beings.

The only reason foreign workers were sent home was because Trump ran on getting rid of them and he did.

that's probably just a config file for ChatGPT that they'll put in their commercial services version..

the merger of ChatGPT and human workforce powered departments will be very interesting, and a safe bet that managers will love.

nothing should be 100% of this or that.
not in my view at least.

because you do want legal immigration to continue, to mix the cultures and bloodlines of Humanity.
to prevent wars.

and to do that, you need international trade, not just of goods, but also of human and robotic services.
