Yes, they did, which is why I corrected them. Read the damn thread next time.

you did not correct anyone
I have no problem with it. We're celebrating the lives of our soldiers ... not their deaths. We're remembering their courage, valor, and self-sacrifice. We're remembering the ones who died but also the ones who lived and are living. So I don't personally see fireworks as disrespectful at all.

Learn what Memorial means. It's not Pet a Living Vet day.

Hey dumbfuck, don't tell me what I did or didn't do next time.

whoop-tie ding you are still incorrect on the meaning of memorial

I don't hate what is necessary in this case. Their dying in large numbers is also necessary. I'm even fine paying for the ones who manage to make it back here. Learn to be rational instead of emotional.

Damn, your lack of knowledge of the English language makes it painful to read your posts.

Memorial Day is for all US veterans. It's pathetic even for you that you can't put aside your partisan bitterness and bickering to just remember the people who died for our freedom instead of having to turn it into a chance for cheap political points to further the lie you were lied to.
Memorial=Dead. Learn our language.
Hey dumbfuck jon_berzerk, get it now?

Not from a non-patriotic point of view perhaps but there are still lots of living families who lost loved ones during wartime. I certainly wouldn't mind someone honoring my brother or father for their sacrifice. Nevertheless, we're celebrating what many soldiers DID so that we could still live by a Constitution that protects our freedoms. That's worth celebrating.
You are celebrating those who DIED. Do you usually do that with fireworks just so you can enjoy blowing shit up?

As long as there is a gathering in honor of the men who died then it doesn't matter one bit if some fireworks are set off. By the way ... have you ever heard of a 21 gun salute?

Did you hear some "explosions?" Genius!
I live in a very retired Veteran oriented community. We have a Domiciliary & rehab center. Also Home of a National Cemetery. We love our vets here. There were fireworks last night at the speedway by the shooting park.
Today started with a pancake breakfast put on by the Boy Scouts. There was a parade down Main St. of all the old vets some on tractors and some riding on fire engines even Horses ~ all that hometown stuff. All flying the American flag. It ended at a park where there was a picnic and local art fair. It was all about the vets & remembering but also celebrating and having a good time. Seeing old friends & neighbors.

At the cemetery there were hundreds of cars full of families looking for the place their loved one waits. There is a beautiful ceremony of remember and honor. But also many very bitchin' fly overs. It was a Fantastic Loud Earth Shaking Day.
Maybe that's it ~ We Honor them with a parade & a celebration because we have so many vets here. It's not about Me & what I want to do. This is the tradition that has been going on around here for at least a 100 years. I'm sure if anyone is to Know how the day should be spent it would be them. We do the same thing for Veterans day too!!
4th of July is Crazy because fireworks are legal yeehaw!!

And No Joke ~ Both Memorial & Veterans day there is a HUGE Machine Gun shootout at the local shooting park. For $20 bucks per magazine you can shoot all kinds of different Military style weapons that you normally wouldn't even see much less shoot. It's a Real Blast:D:D

I see this whole valley get together to remember, celebrate, thank & honor all Veterans. Memorial day is a week end event where real veterans actually travel 100s of miles to get here on bikes cars & motor homes.
Bottom line is it's Fireworks Ok night before Memorial Day...
but Machine Gun Shootout No Problem all day long Sat-Mon

I think the fireworks on Sunday are because by Monday night everyone has headed back home...

Nothing says Happy Memorial Day quite like a Machine Gun Shootout :laugh2:

It's shorthand you little moron. In context it makes perfect sense, to anyone with half a brain, which leaves you out. Next time keep your mouth shut and read the thread.

So it seems. And I used to wonder why they were so dedicated to waving the flag while sending others of to die in wars that didn't need to be fought.

I think you are the one that hasn't gone off the war, until you do, STFU!
I spent a decade building what they use to kill people with. I have enough blood on my hands, thanks all the same. And I'm a decade or two past their age limitations, which makes no sense actually. Send the old guys off to war, we've lived our lives already.

That's a lie. Nobody just working their little portion of making a weapon would ever consider themselves remotely equal to let alone superior to those delivering the weapon.

Oh look, a bunch of anti-American douches whining that we dare to honor veterans with fireworks displays
Memorial Day is a two-fold celebration...we celebrate those fallen, but we also remember and celebrate the freedom that they defend. Across the country, marine corps bands will play at venues that end with fireworks.

Get the **** over it. We're Americans. We're going to honor our veterans. We're proud of them, and when you're proud of something, you celebrate it.

Crawl back under your rocks now, you ******* whiny losers.

They use them, I built them. I got paid far better and we both have blood on our hands.

You gonna break down and learn how to spell wannabe yet?

Yeah, people who died being blown up are honored by you, blowing things up. And the day is for them, not you or freedom. Look it up.

no it was a **** up

memorial never means dead

I know who it's for, you dipwad. My dad, my daughter in law, my son..all veterans. My uncle was a japanese POW during wwii, and 4 other uncles served during wartime as well. My cousin is a real Navy colonel (not of the Bode variety).

We celebrate Memorial Day as Americans. We celebrate the hell out of those who have fallen.

Fireworks have always been about honoring and marking an event. It is a sign of honor to set them off on Memorial Day. The fact that America-hating pansy asses have never made the connection between Memorial day fireworks and the fallen isn't a good reason that we cease and desist. So you're idiots who thought that fireworks were just about stealing your dad's beer and puking behind the bleachers....for the rest of us, it means something else.

So thanks, we'll continue to engage in it.

You losers are sickening.

No it doesn't. Learn the language.

Before I start, allow me to express my deepest gratitude to the men and women of the armed forces of the United States who have paid the highest price in the defense of our country. I would also like to express me condolences to the families of the men and women who have been killed in action and to tell them I am grateful and humbled by their sacrifice.

Now, on to the question I posed in the subject line. It's meant as a serious question.

I was driving last night when I saw fireworks in the distance. I can only assume it was for Memorial Day. Here's the thing. I've always interpreted fireworks as being part of a celebration. For example, we celebrate our Independence day on the 4th of July. It's wholly fitting and appropriate that we celebrate that day. But Memorial Day is not a day to celebrate ALL Veterans. (In the interest of full disclosure, I myself am a Veteran). It's a day to COMMEMORATE the men and women of the combined US armed forces who have fallen in battle or have been killed in a war zone. In other words, a celebration is different than a commemoration.

Thoughts?

This is another area where the government has let down the intendant party.

I think it was in 1971 when Congress decided to always make it on the last Monday in May so that we all get a 3 day weekend. I wouldn't be surprised if the Unions were behind that. Not sure about that. Before that, it was held in early May on a specific date depending on what State you were in to remember the Civil War dead.

By turning it into a 3 day weekend, it lost much of it's legitimacy as a solemn day to remember the fallen.

Celebrating the day by any means is borderline sick

Now that this years Memorial Day has passed, can anyone provide a link to show an event where a Marine Corps band played and was followed by fireworks? Any event held by a county, state or organization that used fireworks?

Other than the 11 a holes here who voted it was OK to have fireworks on Memorial Day, the country seems in basically unanimous agreement that fireworks on Memorial Day is inappropriate.
Otherwise, we would have surely seen some firework displays on Memorial Day. What we see are some places having these displays on the weekend, but not on Memorial Day itself.

The discussion and debate should be whether fireworks is appropriate on Memorial Day Weekend, not Memorial Day. Memorial Day seems to be a settled question and not really up for debate. This assumes my search for information about fireworks on Memorial Day was accurate and my statement about any fireworks displays having been held on the days of the weekend, but not specifically on Memorial Day.
