Do not refer to female pupils as 'girls' or 'ladies' because it 'reminds them of their gender', headteachers told
Teachers should not refer to pupils as âgirls" or "ladiesâ because it means they are âconstantly reminded of their genderâ, the Governmentâs former mental health tsar has said.
Natasha Devon told headteachers of the countryâs leading girlsâ schools that they should be using gender-neutral language when they address their students, and added that the same applied for boys.
Speaking at the Girlsâ School Associationâs annual conference in Manchester, she said that she would ânever walk into a room in an-all girlsâ school and say girls or ladiesâ because it was âpatronisingâ.
She added: âI donât think it is useful to be constantly reminded of your gender all the time and all the stereotypes that go with it.â
Ms Devon said that rather than addressing children as âboysâ or âgirlsâ, teachers should use gender-neutral terms such as âpupilsâ, âstudentsâ or âpeopleâ.
âI think actually in some ways boys are more constrained by the expectation of their gender,â she said. âAnd whilst that is being challenged and changed I donât think itâs helpful to keep saying âgirls, girls, girls, boys, boys, boysâ, because there is so much implication that potentially goes with that.â
Ms Devon said that using the term âgirlsâ can evoke a sense that they have to do everything perfectly which can âcreate a lot of anxietyâ in children and teenagers.
Meanwhile, the term âboysâ carries connotations of âbeing macho, not talking about your feelings, being told to man upâ....
