Daycare is NOT public school. Even during the worst of the lockdowns, the daycares had to stay open on a limited basis so the essential workers could go to work. We're not talking apples and apples here, which is my only point. If OP wants to ***** about the decision not to reopen schools, fine; have at it. No. There is minimal risk to the kids. As union president, his job is not to protect the kids but the WORKERS--you know, the teachers and staff who are in those little kids faces all day. They can be asymptomatic carriers, the science suggests.

That hasn't been the experience in our state, though. Our schools have been open since September (state universities as well) and the case frequency in the schools is lower than in the general population. In other words, a teacher is more likely to catch Covid at Hannaford than at school. There are short periods where they've had to go to remote learning, which I'm sure is hell for working parents, but for the most part, kids are getting a normal school experience. In the cities where enrollment is high, some schools are on a three days remote/two days in class rotation because there isn't enough physical space to social distance everyone at once. But it can work, and I don't know why California, which is 26th in Covid deaths, is so reluctant to try it. Maybe he's in a really hard hit area? I dunno.
