Can you imagine a group of soldiers, in uniform, ignoring the rules of the debate they were attending and reciting the pledge to show everyone just how patriotic they were?

Soldiers in Uniform would not be attending a political debate. At least they shouldn't be attending. And in 22 years on active duty the only times I remember reciting the pledge in uniform was at formal Military dinners. The Military follows strict protocol.There is no debate.

You lecture us about "voting against your self interests" which is liberal for "we know what's best for you!"

It's simply a fact that by voting for conservatives, you are voting against your own interests in favor of a class of people who you are not a part and will never be a part. You can't point to one coherent way that liberal policies have hurt you in the real world. I however can point to innumerable ways that liberal policies have helped you. But, again, you aren't trained to actually consider the real world.

I have respect for REAL patriotism but contempt for this sort of faux-patriotism. Real patriotism is born of a knowledge of the history of the world and a recognition of how our Constitution is such a radical departure from that history. Without the requisite knowledge and understanding, the pledge is a mindless act at best and a mild form of brainwashing at worst. Reciting the pledge doesn't make you a patriot. What you do makes you a patriot or, in your case, not.

The League of Women Voters has been doing these debates for decades. They are the most respected and neutral organization for sponsoring these debates.
As such, they demand a certain decorum from the audience. The audience is there to observe and observe only. They are not to perform public displays, they are not to cheer, they are not to heckle. The ground rules are spelled out before the audience enters

For Murphy to grandstand and ask for the pledge was outside the agreed to scope of the debate and a blatant attempt to wrap himself in the flag. The League of Women Voters was correct in turning down his request
