Angela Merkel injured in skiing accident

A spokesman for German chancellor Angela Merkel said she had injured her pelvis in a cross-country skiing trip and will have to be mostly confined to her bed for the next three weeks.

Steffen Seibert, her spokesman, said she had cancelled all her meetings for Monday and would be working from home.

Mrs Merkel had spent the day before Christmas Eve on the slopes in the Swiss resort of St Moritz, where she was seen cross-country skiing with two bodyguards.

The chancellor has postponed a visit to Warsaw scheduled for Wednesday this week and will not receive Luxembourg's new prime minister, Xavier Bettel, on Thursday.

But she will lead a cabinet meeting on Wednesday which will be the first gathering of all the ministers in the new "grand coalition" government of her conservatives and the centre-left Social Democrats (SPD), which was formalised last month.
