Devaluation means the money is worth less. Let's say you have $10,000 and you could buy a used car with that money. When currency is devalued, it's worth less, which means that, to buy a used car, now you need $15,000. You still have $10,000, you just can't buy a car with it anymore. That's inflation and devaluation. A rapidly growing economy can easily flip into inflation because prices rise as people have more money. Having LESS money around is recession and depression, as people spend less out of fear that they will need what they can hold onto later. Prices plummet and companies struggle because they cannot pay their employees and cannot charge enough to cover their costs. The dollar is ironically worth more because the same amount of money can buy more than it did previously. Now, instead of needing $15,000 to buy a car, maybe you only need $8,000.
