An articulate pro-MAGA argument for a tariff reset

Tariffs and sales taxes are regressive. I support income taxes that are progressive.
/----/ "Tariffs and sales taxes are regressive. "
Hows abouts democRATs who are willing to let the tax cuts expire, creating the largest tax hike in history? Any concern over that regressive tax?

I would let them expire and negotiate zero tax relief for the wealthy. You do want the country with a healthy balance sheet, right?

Income taxes affect everyone at different levels but tariffs do not. You are wrong.
A sales tax and a tariff are regressive. They are a bigger percentage of your income the less you make.

Income taxes are progressive. They are a bigger percentage of your income the more you make.

You are welcome.

I know what it means. What you don't seem to understand is that everything is not tariffed, ergo, everyone is not paying the "taxes". With income taxes, everyone pays. It hurts everyone. You are welcome.

I am not in favor of a progressive tax system anyway. I am more of a flat tax guy. Why should someone pay a higher percentage of tax as income increases? That is kind of silly. Why not make it 100% of any income above 400k?

/——/ I didn’t design the trade system, nor did cheap, China crap make me wealthy. I wanted it fixed for decades, and Trump is finally doing it.
And why does a libtard from New Zealand care about US trade policy?

What is he doing to fix it? He just paused tariffs on China by 90 days and reduced tariffs to 30% from 145%. Would you be getting rich from this up and down, will or won't he, tariff policy right now? Classic Trump voter.

Not everything is tariffed, but a lot of essential stuff is, like Beef, dairy, vegetables, fruits, rice, etc. That's just food. If you buy clothing and electronics, that will go up as well. You could also buy something that isn't tariffed but relies on materials that is. If you own an American made car, then expect car parts to go up! And if we've learned anything corporations will take advantage of this situation to do a second round of price gouging on just about everything and blame it on the tariffs. And none of this accounts for inflation and job losses. You're kidding yourself right now.

Rethinking Trade Tariffs: Why a Global Trade Reset is Good for Growth

For those of us who are pro-tariff but very much against the way this whole thing has been handled, that's a link to an articulate, intelligent argument for what Trump is doing. Obviously it's one-sided, but it is thoughtful and reasonable.

This is precisely the kind of argument that could have been made to our trading parters and (former) friends behind closed doors from the beginning. We could even have put the hammer down and said something like "America is going to see to it that this reset happens. We very much want to work closely with you on it, but please understand it's time for a reset". But this insane clown show was not required.

That's how it's done in a respectful, intelligent, professional way, instead of resorting to insults, accusations, mockery, anger, intimidation and punishment. We've now seriously damaged our relationships with our (former) friends, they're creating new trade relationships that don't include us, and it never had to happen.
"Articulate" does not mean rational...

There is nothing rational about these traiffs.

Sure, but in Trump's mind, completely overdoing it is the one and only option. Chaos, intimidation, threats, punishment. Either he doesn't understand anything else, or (at some level) he knows he doesn't have the ability to do things any other way.

Inflation is not going to be a problem as these tariff talks continue to proceed. It certainly won’t come close to what happened in 2022.
