I was thinking about our current nation. And imagining how we would react to people of previous generations.

First. I don’t think any previous President could get elected today. By the standards of our current discourse. They are too smart. Too educated. Too liberal.

Teddy Roosevelt read books. A lot of books. We would snort with derision at such a man today. The idea that he would read a book a day is ludicrous. Now.

We respected intelligence and we respected education. Now. Imagine if Igor Sikorsky came forward with an idea for a revolutionary new machine. We would snort and denounce him, and his investors. We would insult and belittle him.

Some would even demand he get deported. Or locked up. He was an immigrant.

Most of the scientists who worked on the Atomic Bomb were Jewish. Well we couldn’t allow that today. They would be a part of some nefarious secret plan to keep Jews in power over all of us. Or something.

JFK read a lot of books. Reagan read books.

Carter was a Nuclear Engineer in the Navy. That means he had a lot of brain power.

Bush 41 was a pilot. That means he was smart enough to do math.

What happened that we changed so dramatically? Why do we denounce those with intelligence? We used to celebrate them. We used to heed their words. And we used to respect those who were educated and continued to read, consider, and learn.

We’re they always right? No. But we knew men were mortal. And we knew that we were human and made mistakes.

What does the future hold if we refuse to listen to those with the knowledge we need to make good decisions?

This is what happned to us.

It's funny because you're talking a lot about "reading" and Presidents that used to read.

Donald Trump didn't even read his daily briefings, and lost attention after about 60 seconds of being talked to. He needed picture books to retain his focus.

And he was one of the best presidents we ever had.

Did the US voters get exactly what they voted for in 2020, or did the US oligarchs like FB's Zuckerberg and Twitter's Jack Dorsey, or the MSM's CNN, MSDNC, and the NYT, or Hollywood, or even the "deep state" FBI/DOJ/CIA ruin the fair election of a real US president?

Putin and his crime family of Russian oligarchs looks more and more like the Biden Crime Family and the MSM, deep state, and oligarchs that keep them in power and keep the truth from the US voters.

Presidents before recent modern times knew how to give speeches and answer questions without using a teleprompter.
Therefor, you could judge the person by their intellect and grasp of subjects.
But today they all, with the exception of Trump, just read what a team of speech writers have displayed on a teleprompter for them to repeat.
Which is why we are stuck with an idiot like Biden who can barely form a complete sentence and a retarded VP who thinks cackling is an intellectual form of communication. ... :cuckoo:

So you are telling me you would vote for someone like Teddy Roosevelt?

Hopefully you're mistaking weather for climate.

Yeah, the right wing loons here want a professional wrestling match instead of presidential debates (in fact the GOP has said that it won't allow their candidate to take part in debates organized by the Commission of Presidential Debates). Ten-fifteen years ago, the TEA party was all the rage where they didn't want any new taxes and wanted to cut spending. That went bye-bye real quick. Before that they were the "family values" party....today....they celebrate Trump paying a porn star for sex.

Once Trump is gone, what is interesting is whether they will go back to what they were or delve deeper into the darkness.

Just now, one of the Trump supporters wrote that he wanted to drop NAPALM on the current caravan headed to our southern border. Doesn't exactly resonate with the "shining city on a hill" folks does it?

Reading books is over-rated. Some of the most intelligent and well-informed people I know basically never read books. But they pay attention to their surroundings, gain insights from others, read magazines, and watch Fox News.
Reading books unlocks the creative part of your brain. It boosts intelligence and is a mental workout.

Reading is fundamentally important to a strong and smart society.

I would say that there were just as many failures of older presidents as there are the so called modern presidents.
Trying to equate reading and intelligence is crazy. I know a number of people that never finished high school and seldom read that are much more intelligent then a few that have a college degree and read all the time. Some of that is do to the fact that some are reading what amounts to the cat in the hat type of thought provoking books and can not look at the world around them and understand how things really work.

Biden is a lawyer if that means anything.

He overcame a lot then, didn't he? He did a good job.
