Am I correct? Trump is saying that Canada and Mexico will be hit with 25% but China will only get 10% more? Trump is backing out of his 60% promise?

One of the reason people like myself supported Trumps policies was it is critical that America remain solvent and this means dealing with debt, China and an open border, primarily. It is imperative to avoid WWIII.

He promised he would hit China with a 60% tariff and even more if necessary which is very popular not only in America but among those nations at risk from Chinas immense rise and military expansion. Is it possible that he has too many weak China-First people on his team? I hope not, because if so Trumps term will be impacted greatly and China will be firing missiles into Taiwan before the end of his term.

If he determines that it's easier to just punish Canada et al and let China skate away, it will destroy his legacy. His threat to confront China wasn't a weak and meager "10% more than current tariffs". That's chump change compared to their tactics that have gutted U.S industries.

“On January 20th, as one of my many first Executive Orders, I will sign all necessary documents to charge Mexico and Canada a 25% Tariff on ALL products coming into the United States, and its ridiculous Open Borders,” Trump posted on his Truth Social platform. “This Tariff will remain in effect until such time as Drugs, in particular Fentanyl, and all Illegal Aliens stop this Invasion of our Country!”

Trump said America’s neighbors can “easily solve this long simmering problem.”

Similarly, Trump said that China will face higher tariffs on its goods – by 10% above any existing tariffs – until it prevents the flow of illegal drugs into the United States.

“I have had many talks with China about the massive amounts of drugs, in particular Fentanyl, being sent into the United States – But to no avail,” Trump posted on Truth Social.

The president-elect claimed in the post that Chinese officials promised him the country would execute drug dealers caught funneling drugs into the United States but “never followed through.”

1. Told you so.

2. We get cheap shit from China. We don't want to fuck that up. But what do we get from Canada that we need? Nothing. Cheap shit from Mexico too. Let's do more business with them and less with you.

3. You need to start paying more. I mean Canada. Like Europe we protect you and you don't pay your fair share.

Canada should provide about 3 to 4 per cent of the required financing for global climate action, according to the Pembina Institute. However, some say Canada is failing to deliver its fair share of global climate finance.

The Canadian government is one of the few NATO allies that fails to meet the 2 percent defense expenditure threshold.

Canada is more than capable of meeting its obligations and has done so before.

This is coming from the Heritage Foundation so THE GOSPEL according to Republicans and you supported them dumbass.

Canada’s continued underinvestment leaves its NATO obligations unmet and weakens the overall defense of the alliance as a whole and the North American continent.

Canada isn’t a small country, nor is it a poor one. It’s perfectly capable of meeting its treaty obligations. Yet it spends a mere 1.37 percent of its GDP on defense, or roughly $30.5 billion a year. Despite having the sixth largest GDP among NATO countries, Canada ranks twenty-seventh in defense spending as a proportion of GDP. For comparison, the United States is the third-highest NATO member ranked in percentage of GDP (3.38 percent), behind only Poland and Estonia.

"Above existing tariffs" is operative running at up to 25% already.

Seems Trump is serious about the border.

The US already has MANY tariffs on Chinese goods. If Canada and Mexico want to enter into US policy decisions uninvited or wanted, then they should pay the price. A 25% tariff on Mexican goods might go far to stem the tide of illegal immigration, human trafficking and the fentanyl crisis. Turdeau is not innocent in his attempts to influence American politics either.

This is "signalling" to corporate giants and hedge funds how to play.

Not like it's a secret. But here's the details. And it will definitely change things. So moving plants and equipment takes time and stockpiled goods.

Like I said....signaling the details.

For fucks sake give it a rest!

He hasn't even been sworn in yet!

OMG Trump said he would cut his hair before the inauguration and it's been 20 minutes AND HE STILL HASN'T GOT A HAIR CUT...HE LIED!!! :meow:
He posted this yesterday so what are you talking about?

If he wanted to wait until he was inaugurated he wouldn't have posted it.

I have lobbied for Canada to follow the American system of civil liberties and accountability government. Freedom ensures innovation and creativity, it's why I've said it Musk had immigrated to Canada he'd be working in a warehouse somewhere, but in America he is free.

Trump should call it a "freedom tariff" or something and he would get Canadas attention.

We do provide plenty of energy especially to particular states. We also provide minerals, nickel and such. When you had your hurricane travesty a few weeks ago, Canada sent trucks and energy resources to help.

I think he's bluffing and trying to divide and conquer before the 2026 re-negotiation of USMCA but we will see,

He definitely needs to whack China with tariffs and/or confront them aggressively on Taiwan. He also needs to sell Taiwan $25B worth of high tech weapons designed to keep China at bay. This would perform multiple objectives with not only little risk, but benefit to America when you export.

You can't be worried about a slow pulling off of the bandage, there is far more at risk than just jobs, we could be seeing the saving of millions of lives.

Trump is backing down on his promise concerning this. I was a bit shocked to hear it was only 10% for China. What part of that makes sense?

If I were Canada, and Mexico I wouldn't even take Trump serious, nor respect him with unfair tariff increase like that. Especially with China being the richest country of the three... why increase them by only 10%. Something is just not right about that.

Look how dirty Trump did black women after his campaign telling them how much he would make things better for them saying to them, "What have you got to lose?" Apparently black women had absolutely nothing to gain with Trump not hiring them... another campaign promise broken.

The #1 issue in this election was stopping the invasion at our borders. We have 2. Trump is doing just what he promised. Watch Canada and Mexico behave accordingly.
It's not that you couldn't address the problem, it is that you chose to exacerbate it instead that warrants Trump's action.
Is Canada smart enough to correct that problem, and watch those tariffs just melt away? We shall see...

And he just posted he will cripple mexico with tariffs if they don't stop the caravans headed toward the USA.

The tariffs are used as a hammer to beat those to try to harm us. It's quick, easy, and it works!

No different than obey the speed limit or you'll be fined.
Sure but only 10% more against China?

Who does he think is providing the compounds for the poisons they send over? Who does he think is pushing American influence out of Latin America, Africa and some Middle Eastern countries?

Trump and Vance can't deviate from this critical test. If they do, America will lose major ground and WWIII is a real possibility.

This term will define his legacy. Reagan defeated communism. Trump will have to do the same.

Don't trust a dishonest MSM to get it right. But Trump is not only advising our trading partners that if they do not stop behaviors detrimental to Americans, they get the tariffs. If they stop the behavior, no tariffs.

And he is not only stating a reasonable policy, but is doing the right thing and doing it now when Biden might get the credit instead of waiting until he is inaugurated. It is possible those trading partners will act before Trump takes office and the tariffs will not be necessary at all.

You are confusing border policy with economic policy. Border is #1. So, what ever it takes on that front, we should approve. 25% tariffs on countries that allow criminals to flood across our border is fine. Here is the cure for that. Stop sending thousands of illegals to our border and the tariffs go away. Boom!

Trump will choke China on the world stage. The policy toward China is completely different than dealing with illegals. One impacts us, the other impacts the economies of the world. I am confident Trump knows exactly how to torpedo China's economy by taking ours to it's zenith.

All I know is America spends too much while Europe and Canada don't spend enough of their GDP on defense. We have to pick up the bill for you? That's going to end.

Canada to boost military spending by nearly $6 billion but falls short on NATO goal

The new defense policy paper does not offer a timeline for the country to meet the 2 percent GDP target but it argues a move to double military spending between 2016-2017 to 2026-2027 is “on track.”

So even after you spend 6 billion more than you were, you are still falling short.
