Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez slams tip tax break

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) took aim Wednesday at the $25,000 cap on the “no tax on tips” provision included in the Senate-passed version of President Trump’s “big, beautiful” spending and tax bill.

“As one of the only people in this body who has lived off of tips, I want to tell you a little bit about the scam of that text, a little bit of the fine print there,” Ocasio-Cortez said during her floor speech, amid debate on the rule for the revised megabill.

“The cap on that is $25,000,” she said, “while you’re jacking up taxes on people who make less than $50,000 across the United States, while taking away their [Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program] program, while take taking away their Medicaid, while kicking them off of the [Affordable Care Act] and their health care extensions.”

The reconciliation package, which advanced back to the House after Vice President Vance cast a tie-breaking vote Tuesday, includes a $25,000 cap on the amount of tips workers can claim in their deductions. The lower chamber’s bill, which was passed in May, did not place a cap under the “no tax on tips” provision — one of Trump’s campaign promises.

Comment:
Most working people would love to get a $25,000 tax break.
AOC reminds me of when Nancy Pelosi called Trump's first term tax cut bill "crumbs" for middle class workers.
The truth is that in left wing economics the working people are plow horses for the government spending.
The Democrats must be fearing that their slaves might escape.

It and the OT thing are three year provisions that are aimed at just getting the GOP through the midterms with less blood in their hands. It is their version of the student loan mess Biden created.

simp you are in for a world of hurt. you have not seen anything yet
BS.

Your side hit the gas on spending. Well STEALING.

This bill does more for working class than anything I have seen.

Your corrupt blue states stealing Fed Money are going down. Enjoy KARMA

Because the deficit is over a trillion dollars and we are having a hard time affording interest on the debt which is already over 120% of GDP.
Yeah, that’s why the voted to raise taxes on the poor, minorities, and working folks. :auiqs.jpg:

Obviously no one here does their own taxes.
When you have no taxes on tips, that means you have no nightly paperwork.
But once you put a cap on it, then every tip has to be accounted for, so that you can tell when you reach the cap or not.
That forces a huge amount of nightly paperwork on people who should not have to do that.
So? They already have to do all that, stupid.

It's not as 25,000 tax break. It only limits the tips up to 25,000. Meanwhile, that is used to buy votes that will be charged much more than that for health care and lose at least that amount in Medicaid. The break is just for the taxes, not anything else. Let's see just how dumb people really are that buy this BS.

It's a new $25,000 deduction off income. That's big. It was taxed before, now its not.

Roughly $100/day of working per year is no longer counted as income. Don't start on me today! Warning#1

A traitor would be the democrats policy of letting over 40,000,000 million illegal aliens invade our cities and towns

Exactly. While some are good, unvetted means 10-25% are criminals turned loose into America. 4-10 million.

We'll take it BUT note how the tax and spend politician assholes refused to actually give up the tax stream. Ditto for taxes on over time. Ditto for taxes on the already taxed Social Security money. They have reserved the option of F'ing us over again later.

Stupid OX. Congress has three years to make it permanent (if it looks OK). Just SHUP.

The 2017 tax rates looked OK so they are keeping those you ignorant Obiden fool.

I would happily welcome everyone in our country. Legally, without the 5 years of government blocking the legal entry into our country

The cause of this problem though is two fold. democrats need criminals to remain in power. democrats always create an evil to save us from, from slavery to the kkk to blm and antifa.

Thus far illegal aliens is the best way to destroy us.

The other cause is we allow tyrants to enslave the people of other countries so that the people have no choice.

We need law and order. We need justice in Washington DC.

This is why democrats are at war with the American people, they are the criminals and they know more Americans are becoming aware.

A. SS is taxed, all you get is a tax break of up to $6,000 per person (DOTARD said NO tax on SS) derp derp derp
B. Trump ran on NO taxes on TIPS derp derp derp DOTARD lied
You are not affected of course but you are wrong. What passed is this.

A proposal to end federal tax on Social Security retirement benefits would provide relief for retirees as early as next year. That’s because, as the bill is worded, federal taxes on Social Security income would be eliminated beginning in 2025 (tax returns filed in early 2026). The You Earned It, You Keep It Act is referred to as a “win-win” by its sponsor, Minnesota Rep. Angie Craig (D-Minn.).

“It's a tax cut for seniors and a way to ensure more Americans can depend on the Social Security benefits they’ve earned,” Rep. Craig said in a release.

One way to look at is as follows.
RULE NO.1 OF COMRADE SPEAK: If you're a communist/socialist it is the only way you're allowed to look at it, the instant another way of thinking about it arises the red flag defense mechanisms of the mind shut them/it down.
Bezos had a 50M wedding. Take the bottom 250 earners total LIFE savings on this board and you will not even be close to 50M.
Then/Now tell us what the difference in their savings would be if Bezos didn't have that kind of money. [prepare for "RULE NO. 1]

The hypocrisy can be frustrating. I would love a $25,000 deduction on my taxes. The average waiter makes around $36,000 in tips So he/she will be paying taxes on roughly $11,000 of his/her tip income instead of $36,000.

Yes President Trump wanted all tips to be excluded from the tax base but the Congress couldn't agree to get that done. But the give and take, negotiations and compromises necessary for such important legislation produced some very significant real tax relief for those who rely on tips for most of their income.

Those who wanted more spending cuts ignore the roughly $1.2 trillion in cuts built into the bill. Yes the lowered taxes are more than that and it is said that will explode the deficit, but history informs us that economic stimulus has always more than offset the reduction in carefully reduced taxes and treasury revenues have increased. Shouldn't we wait to see if that holds true again before making a hard judgment about it?

The GOP promises more budget cuts are on the way--the DOGE efforts will help a great deal in that regard--and if we can keep the MAGA GOP in the majority in Congress, we have a very good chance that they won't see that increased revenue and much more as money they can spend. They aren't woke Democrats.
