Obama forced to switch to backup.

What the hell is going on here? The AF VIP squadron is supposed to be the top-notch, very best group in the world. And they continue to have problems with their aircraft. First, we learn that Kerry had to fly commercial – and now this?

Wonder if it was the same aircraft.

I did a bit of research and discovered the two CV-25s were built in 1987 and have been in constant use every since. They were originally scheduled to be replaced in 2017 but, as Obama has seriously cut military spending, there's no information on whether or not this will happen.

Another thing - as both aircraft are highly classified, there's no way of knowing exactly how many hours they've been flown or what their maintenance standards are. At 37 years, I'm certain they've seen a lot of hours and miles.

I knew a guy who worked on AF-1 when he was stationed at Andrews, He's stationed in Texas now. Apparently all the mechanics have to spend 6-12 months waxing the plane first, before they ever get to twist a wrench on it. When I worked as a Mechanic for a regional airline we had dedicated cleaners to all that.

I wouldn't be surprised if Boeing took over more of the maintenance work. They do that on most of the planes anyway. Mechanics remove and replace components when its time but any real heavy maintenance or troubleshooting is done by Civilian Reps. I rember meeting civilian reps for the C-5's in Japan back in the early 80's.

The best man at my wedding is a retired Gunny Sgt who worked in Helicopter Maintence. You don't wanna' hear the stories he told about maintence. He'd laugh about it but I would just cringe.

I know an Air Force One mechanic. He's gotten me some cool souvenirs like a box of Air Force One peanut M&M's. He works some crazy hours sometimes.

Anyways that is all carry on!

Wow this story makes me wonder why there is a back up........its almost like someone predicted that there might be a mechanical problem at somepoint......

Technically ANY aircraft on which the POTUS boards, is callsinged as Air Force One.
Now, there are two specially outfitted Boeing 747'as that fly simultaneously on every trip. One is a spare/decoy.
In fact Air Force One is not Air Force One until the POTUS has officially boarded the aircraft.

What's surprising is that Obama's ego is still being crammed into a tiny little 747 when the socialist-leaning French are offering the more suitably sized Airbus 380:

The stretch version would also have room for Moochelle!

I wonder if they'll continue on with 747 line. You have the redundancy of four engines but that is a really old design despite the newer upgrades, most airliners competing in that space have already replaced or started to replace their 747s with newer more efficient jets.

I think the new Boeing 777x is supposed to start deliveries pretty soon, that would be big enough and have all the modern composites, engines, etc. you'd expect from a modern jumbo, assuming USAF could live with two engines.

Our GSA cards aren't working today. We can't get any fuel for our vehicles for some strange reason. Nothing was announced.

Been waiting over 6 years for my cost of living adjustment. Obama froze everyone's pay when he stepped into the Oval Office.

This is the kind of shit we've been dealing with since he took office.

You mean Obama froze government employee's pay raises?

During a recession?

Wow.....harsh.....

I can see why Conservatives would hate that.....

Yup, ******* the Department of Defense is the only cutting the prick did just about. He's also raised on post gas prices to 12 cents on average per gallon over prices on the economy. Jacked up prices in the Commissary at least 10%.

But he's spending countless dollars to give Obamacare to refugees from Central America, Africa, and the Middle-East. Gave millions to Pakistan and Egypt.

If he was this nice to his own people he wouldn't be dealing with a Republican takeover of Congress right now.

I bet they'll never come up with the figures but I'm betting the veterans and active military who voted FOR the GOP and against Obama was huge. :salute:

If YOU were still 'active', would YOU want that character as CiC?

Yes there is a back up. Bottom line is planes are machines. They have problems. Just because there is a seal on it does not mean it doesn't age.
