We used to stay in hotels in Kuwait and Saudi Arabia.....but that changed in 91 under the Bush cutbacks. Every once in awhile we stayed in hotels....but only because they didn't have any place for us on bases.

That has changed since then. Were you crew though? That makes a massive difference. Passengers and maintenance always got screwed. There were myriads of examples where the crew would use crew rest to claim they could not stay on base and get some posh hotel off base.

There are some rather serious problems with crew and how they are able to bilk the system.

Not relevant without establishing some sort of command to go there from the WH, particularly with a guard crew where odd stops are very likely. We would always fight to return with the C-130 crews if possible from Qatar because they would often stop in some awesome places (including Ireland and Scotland) as they had a lot more control over their itinerary being guard. I don't know about this specific airport but I do know it is far larger and deals with a lot more traffic than a LOT of civilian airports I have stopped at before.

Are there any reports on the weather? Are there any reports on where the flight plan came from? Was the stop even on a flight plan? Were there maintenance issues forcing an early landing? Why is this the ONLY crew that seems to have stopped there? Do you really think that there are no other considerations for this particular stop when there seem to be no other examples of this?

You see, this 'news report' is based almost entirely on missing information rather than actual facts. We really know 2 things, the crew stopped at an unusual location (happens all the time) and stayed at an overpriced resort (also happens ALL the time).

Germany gave us a discount, but that was back when the exchange rate was figured in Deutsche Marks.....but it all depends on the value of the US Dollar to whatever currency us used in the country they land in. Right now everything is in Euros... Then again European governments have been ripping us off like nobody's business.
