Ack! Colonoscopy next tuesday for me.

My first. So I googled like mad and asked the doc lots of questions. Not too worried about it since he said "you won't feel a thing. You will be in lalaland". His words..not mine. Which made me laugh and feel not so uptight.
I had radical surgery to remove a malignant lesion (colon cancer) in '97, so I have a colonoscopy every July.

The procedure itself is nothing, provided you go under general anesthetic (which I recommend you insist on). The only thing you will feel is the pinch of the IV needle -- then you wake up and it's over.

The bad part is the prep. On the day before the procedure I must eat nothing and drink a full liter of Gator-Ade with 8 oz. of Mira-Lax dissolved in it. This is a powerful laxative, so be sure to remain in close proximity to a toilet after drinking it.

the procedure is nothing, you are out for it.

its the ******* prep that is some damn fucked up shit!!!!! Salt.... salt...salt. Nasty stuff. But you HAVE to finish it.

my suggestions..... fast or eat as little as possible for 24 hours before you stat in on the 24 hour prep. Eat soft things like oatmeal and pudding... the less you have to blast out, the better off you will be.

Its true, but boy are you going to have some serious gas when its over.

That's what I am afraid of...waking up in the middle of the procedure.
That won't happen if your doctor uses a competent and experienced anesthesiologist, one who is not overly cautious about dosage. I only had that problem once and it was a very brief moment of consciousness.

My diet starting Monday is clear broth, jello that is not red or purple, water, clear juice. All day. Breakfast, lunch and dinner. Oh, and I can have tea with honey in it but no dairy.
Then at 6pm, I am to drink half of the GoLyte. Doc said don't let the name fool me...nothing will be Lyte about it, lol. I get up on Tuesday at 7am and drink the other half of the GoLyte, then head to the outpatient building where the procedure will be done. I CAN drink juice with the GoLyte if it's gross, they said.
But on Sunday..yes..I will eat light meals that are more solid, but not heavy. On monday I will be starving except for the broth and jello...then tuesday after it's all over, I plan to pig out.

so my point was...

your diet on sunday....should be as little as possible and as soft as possible.... stick with oatmeal.

Not being uptight during a Colonoscopy is kind of ...well....

Can't. Oat has gluten. Cream of Rice should work though. No gluten either.

I was reading on google...recommendations from some folks is to add a tablespoon or so of clear chicken broth to it...so it takes like soup.

I think my plan of action is to eat very light over the weekend. Nothing heavy. Cream of rice, maybe soup. Maybe scrambed eggs. On monday, I do the prep and then drink the Nasties. I wonder if it is as bad as Barium? I sucked that stuff down like it was a milkshake. Is GoLytely worse than barium?

Where is you sense of adventure? Eat a 20 0z. New York strip steak and have 15 bowls of high-fibre bran cereal.......

I wouldn't worry too much, you will be dead to the world and won't know a thing til you wake up.

I hope it goes well for you, though.

I'm getting stressed out right now so I better stop googling. It isn't the procedure that is worrying me. It's the stuff I have to drink..and so much of it!!! So I am stressing about that, mostly.

Is that the stuff to clean your bowels out? I had to have Pico Prep or something.

Don't mean to scare you, Gracie. :(

I have never had one ...yet. Had a friend tell me it kind of made him feel better, sort of cleaned out the pipes and less bloated for a couple weeks.

Think positive.

I dunno. I'm pretty freaked out right now and it isn't supposed to be done til next tuesday.
Nausea, puking, the volume of the stuff you have to drink, the foulness of the taste, the chills, camping out on the pot for hours after it kicks in. Then having to do it all over again the following morning and then having to drive an hour to get to the place and having to have a bucket with me in the car in case I have to "go" some more, possibly soiling myself.

Drink it thru a straw, drink it fast, drink it slow else you will puke it back up.

I'm thissssssssss close to canceling it altogehter.

What???? What nausea, what puking, what chills? What camping out on the pot for hours?

Who have you been talking to? I used Fleet back when I had mine, mixed it with apple juice and slugged it down. Sure I went to the bathroom a lot, but between bouts I could get off the toilet and go do something else.

I don't remember any puking. Chills? Nothing of any note.

Here's what you do...pretend you're on Survivor and a million dollars is at stake. This is he final immunity challenge. Slug that stuff down, Gracie, you can do it!!! Chase it with a little apple juice or whatever. And you're supposed to drink lots of water, they told you that, right?

I don't understand about the bucket in the car? When it was within a few hours of the procedure all the cleansing was over for me. There was NOTHING left to come out. That's the whole idea, to get everything cleaned out before the procedure. You shouldn't still be having to go right up to the time for the procedure. I guess it wouldn't hurt to have a bucket along just in case, though. ; )

I didn't have too much of that. Once again...no...big...deal.

If anyone thinks their colonoscopy prep and colonscopy was a big deal, I feel sorry for them if they have to undergo something that actually IS difficult.

Nah, you gotta chow down on the weekend! load up on the meat and potatoes. Swallow some chewing gum. Eat Spam straight from the can. If you gotta drink all that nasty stuff and probably take some laxatives on top of it all, you might as well get all the fireworks you're paying for anyway. Get the cannon fully loaded before you drink the gun powder.

I could tell you a tale of a colonoscopy that would curl your hair (or uncurl it if already curly).

I have been discussing this with some old online friends of mine and I have told them more than I am telling here. I have decided to NOT do the colonoscopy for awhile. I have to get other things taken care of first. This is going too fast. I don't have enough info from my gastrowhatever doctor...and I still have the other issue with another doctor about something that needs to be taken care of first, I think.

Too soon. Too fast. It can wait another month. So that's what I decided to do. I can't tell you all here what is going on...it's embarassing to me on some level and my brain is overwhelmed right now...and I am afraid. So...not gonna do this right now.
