Aborting a Baby with Down Syndrome: Islamic Perspectives

19 Oct 2024 ~~

Question:
Respected scholars, as-salamu `alaykum. I am a mother of 4 children, and I am 5 months pregnant. When I did ultrasound, my doctor told me that I have a baby with Down's Syndrome. The first time I didn't believe her, so I went and took the amniocentesis test, which gave me a positive result, which means the baby has Down's syndrome with heart defects and other problems. My faith in God is bigger than ever. My question is what is the fatwa about the abortion? Jazakum Allahu khayran.
In this fatwa:
  • Abortion can only be permitted when there is an actual threat to the life of the mother, and this is determined by a medical examination that reveals that if the pregnancy advances any further, the mother may die.
  • Aborting the fetus when it is not threatening the life of the mother would be tantamount to killing what Allah has granted.
  • Muslim parents should never abort 5-month-old fetus that is not threatening the mother’s life. Rather, they should depend on Allah and receive Allah’s test patiently, trusting that they will be rewarded for their patience.
Therefore, my advice to you is to put your trust in Allah, know that all souls belong to Allah alone. Never think of aborting the 5-month-old baby, who is considered to be a living human being whose life is sacred. Even if he was born with Down’s Syndrome, there are many children in the world who are like him and many of them live a happy life. You should depend on Allah and receive His test patiently, anticipating His great reward in the hereafter.
Almighty Allah knows best.

Commentary:
I don't agree with a lot about Islam but this? Yea we have this in common.
The only thing I'd add to Sheikh Muhammad Al-Mukhtar Ash-Shinqiti or the mother is that sometimes the doctors are wrong and the baby may not have downs. You might have aborted a perfect child.
It’s truly amazing that we, in the pro-life community have something in common with Islam….
he gives a very good answer, excellent actually. It’s unlikely to a false diagnosis with amnio, but most persons with Downs Syndrome lead happy lives. And many fully healthy people are miserable!
The issue that has been returned to the states is correct. The Federal government has no business in the abortion issue.
It should soley between the parents and their physcian(s).

The more I learn about abortion and the pressures young women go through to have one, the more I thank G-d he chose my Mother for me to be born, even though I've had a difficult life.

95% Or more of young women today would have aborted me. My Mother defied everyone, even my Catholic grandpa.

In Islam, and most religions, abortion is forbidden. Islam is considerably liberal concerning abortion, which is dependent on (i) the threat of harm to mothers, (ii) the status of the pregnancy before or after ensoulment (on the 120th day of gestation), and (iii) the presence of foetal anomalies that are incompatible with life. Considerable variation in religious edicts exists, but most Islamic scholars agree that the termination of a pregnancy for foetal anomalies is allowed before ensoulment, after which abortion becomes totally forbidden, even in the presence of foetal abnormalities; the exception being a risk to the mother’s life or confirmed intrauterine death.
