More gun history with a hypocritical slant. Edward (Teddy) Kennedy grew up on a compound protected by a little army of armed guards but his political agenda was to disarm the rest of America. On January 1987 a (civilian) Kennedy bodyguard was arrested trying to enter the Senate office Building armed with an arsenal of automatic and semi automatic weapons. Teddy used his powerful influence to get the charges dismissed.

Well, why don't you take this opportunity to enlighten us with a list of distorted and made-up claims and explain why each is lacking in truth. And do remember that "most" implies more than half of them.

If you’d like, sure. There are seven, so my goal is four. I’ll start with Germany.

The meme is trying to say that German Jews could own guns before the government took them away in 1938, clearing the way for Nazis to round up Jews, which is not what happened. Germany lost most of its gun ownership rights after WWI in 1919 and then steadily reinstituted them over the years following. In 1938, a gun control law made it *easier* for all Germans to buy guns, and on Kristallnacht (in November of that year), German Jews had the same ownership laws as anyone else. Their right to own any kind of weapon, including guns, were later taken away, but Germans did not disarm Jews in order to oppress them, and the Jews having the right to own guns didn’t help them stand up to the Stormtroopers one bit.

China. The 1935 date is completely made up; nothing happened then. China had required permits dating back before WWI, and didn’t enact any other laws until it cracked down on private ownership until deep into the 50s, long after Mao's government exterminated millions. Again, the citizens had guns, and again, they didn’t help.

Guatemala had strict gun control laws long before 1964. The indigenous Mayans were dirt poor and rural, and guns were expensive and hard to get. The military dictators that won their Civil War a) didn’t pass any new laws, b) didn't need to, c) wouldn’t have cared if they did, and c) would not have been slowed down much, even by a heavily-armed rural population. Again, they didn’t help.

It was Idi Amin’s predecessor who instituted a nationwide ban on private gun ownership in 1969. Amin changed it back to a license system in 1970 … and then proceeded to round up and kill his predecessor’s mostly-Christian followers in the years that followed. Guns didn’t help.

Cambodia had gun control going back to French Colonial times. Nothing that I know of happened during their time as a Kingdom, including in 1956. After a military coup in 1970, the Khmer Rouge took over in 1975 and started the slaughtering. They neither passed nor required new gun laws in order to do so; they simply killed whoever they wanted and took everyone's stuff, including their guns, which again didn’t help.

Back to the first two. Armenians in (what is now) Turkey weren’t generally armed to begin with, until the military begrudgingly allowed them to be for WWI. Turkey then blamed the Armenians for the ass-kicking they received, and then disarmed them as they slaughtered them, so we’ll call that a “sort of.” Russia is probably the strongest case here; Stalin, like all of the other tinpot dictators on this list, took guns away from the peasants as he rounded them up and killed them.

The unifying factor here isn't gun control; it's dictators. This is why we resist putting all of the power in one person's hands.

Bonus! The idea that Japan didn’t invade America because of the guns is bunk. Japan’s goal was Asia, not America, and there is no evidence that Yamamoto or anyone else ever said that. Japan never had any desire or ability to even consider an American invasion. Someone made it up.

Double Bonus! Switzerland does not issue guns; their young men serve in the citizen militia, during which time their ammo is kept at the base, and afterward they can apply to keep their gun if they like. They have gun control similar to ours. Also, they do not have the lowest gun crime rates; in fact, they have one of the highest gun death rates in the world.

I thought maybe you'd at least check with Snopes. They say is it mostly FALSE based on semantics. Gun control implies laws, not confiscation. That is the principle fallacy in the OP wording (which I copied and pasted without edit).

I am, however, very familiar with the Snopes article that you were nice enough to link, and I will point out that my point-by-point assertions mostly align with theirs.

Also, look at what the Snopes article said, especially under "What's False," which according to both of us is "Mostly." It and I both refuted the meme's writer's assertions that guns were taken away in order to exterminate certain people, and that the exterminations were possible because the guns were taken away. Neither are true. I should also point out that the minority "What's True" talks about dictatorships (which we aren't), the military (which aren't involved), and gun confiscation targeted at oppressed minorities (which no one is proposing, as far as I know).

I'm absolutely not challenging that dictators, Communist or not, love to kill dissidents—they do, and they amassed a massive body count last century. No arguments there. I'm also not challenging the existence of the Second Amendment; unless it gets repealed (which it won't be), any gun control we propose has to adhere to it. I get that. No arguments there, either.

What I'm saying is that the meme's assertions that:
- Gun control is enacted in order to disarm people, in preparation for an extermination; and,
- Exterminations are possible only if the people are disarmed.

I don't know that anyone has claimed that exterminations are possible only if the people are disarmed. They can also be starved or gassed. Both of these techniques have been used by despots.
