‘A literal gut punch’: Missouri workers devastated by Republican repeal of paid sick leave

The republican government in MO repealed a bill providing paid sick leave to workers that was approved by 58% of the voters. For lower income workers a sick day means unpaid bills or food off the table. They caved to a powerful lobbying group composed of industry groups, who of course have more available funds than struggling workers.

Another case of Republican rule, the worst government money can buy.

A "literal gut punch?" Whose fist literally struck whose midsection?

The bill did not provide paid sick leave. I think you mean that the bill forced employers to provide paid sick leave.

If the voters want entry level workers with no skills to automatically get paid sick leave unearned, then they should have voted to pay for it with voters' tax dollars, not to have the funds stolen from employers in yet another tax on success.

Guy starts a part-time job at McDonalds and gets sick the next day. How many days of paid sick leave should he be "entitled to?"

What a failed retort.

Well, what a stupid GOP move.

I am not a Republican or a Democrat ... my politics are libertarian (but as such I would eschew any big "L" party).

The reason I almost exclusively vote for Republicans is that we see eye-to-eye on many thing and the most important of which is the government has absolutely no business dictating the relationship between them and their workers,

This is a perfect example of eliminating unnecessary and intrusive government regulations into that relationship.

It is if one punishes them for being sick. People working hard do get sick.
Where is the punishment? You're not depriving them of a single dollar they earned. The employer paid someone else to do their job the day they were sick.

Why should the employer be punished because the employee got sick.

Then it is time to strike.
That's hillarious.

What level workers in what industry would be:

a) not already getting paid sick leave,

and

b) willing to strike over paid sick leave, having taken a job that offers no paid sick leave,

and

c) so irreplaceable that employers would cave-in to the demand in order to bring them back?

The wrong questions. Those jobs that in our country are now normally in the paid sick leave category.

Employers that deny pto should not be hiring.

Correct, so it is a small number of people who could even have a reason to strike for paid sick leave.

So, who in that small minority, who are in low-wage, no benefit jobs would be willing to give up the little pay they get in a gamble to force their employer to pay them to stay home when they don't feel like working?

People who work at low-paid, no benefit jobs generally fall into two categories: Teenagers who just want to save for a car and entertainment, and very low-skilled near-unemployable laborers who take what they can get, knowing that the working poor get government benefits to make up for the benefits their employers don't pay.

Except . . . paid sick leave is NOT an employer benefit that government makes up for, as it does health insurance, for example.

My point is that if the voters really want such workers to have paid sick leave, let it be tax funded as are food stamps, WIC, and Obamacare for the working poor. That way we all share the burden of such voter generosity instead of forcing job creaters to take on yet another unfunded mandate.

Or . . . are you concerned that people won't vote for that if they have to pay for it and not those evil job providers?

.

Yes, they are bad people aren't they?

Providing jobs to low-skilled, near-unemployable laborers, but not wanting to also pay them when they are unable or unwilling to work?

LOL how an earth can the government mandate employers to give a certain amount of sick leave? That’s up to the business to decide.

If you don’t like the terms, go work somewhere else.

15th post
And if they font they should be publicly mocked and rificuled. Theres no excuse to mistreat workers. But perhaps you dont like workers.
If they don’t folks shouldn’t work there

A person would have to be all out communist and unhireable to think Burger King should pay for 2 months sick pay.

The government didn't mandate this. The people did.
