There are enough stakes on the table right now to make it worthwhile to give both of them damned near anything they ask for. The catch is that it would be the LAST payoff because they know they'll be at the end of their time in DC. Manchin cannot go along with the anti-2A psychos, especially if he yields on the filibuster. OTOH, if he were to stand up for the country and stop those who want to kill the filibuster, he could run as a Republican in his state and go right back to DC. There are enough stakes on the table right now to make it worthwhile to give both of them damned near anything they ask for. The catch is that it would be the LAST payoff because they know they'll be at the end of their time in DC. Manchin cannot go along with the anti-2A psychos, especially if he yields on the filibuster. OTOH, if he were to stand up for the country and stop those who want to kill the filibuster, he could run as a Republican in his state and go right back to DC. I pray that this is one of those times when personal ambition and what's best for the nation, are in conjunction.
If they nuke the filibuster then it will signal that a total power grab is imminent.

I have thought the same thing about Manchin at times. Why isn't he a Republican? The answer? It's complicated. I personally don't think the Republican party would give him the time of day unless he submitted fully to party philosophy.
