Iran could merely fire a missile at an occasional merchant ship. That isnt "control". The US can fire on ships too, and we did. We sunk all of their ships. We openly escorted ships through the strait and we snuck ships through the strait. We controlled it.

The fact is that all credible sources acknowledge that Iran controlled the straight . Yes, the US might have been able to gain control with a massive and costly ground military operation.
