A bitter-sweet glimpse into what Jerusalem might have been

storytellerofjerusalem.jpg

It is no overstatement to say that the appearance of The Storyteller of Jerusalem (Olive Branch Press) — Wasif Jawhariyyeh’s memoirs in English — is a very significant event.

Far from being an austere, religious place at the heart of political events, Jawhariyyeh’s Jerusalem is a city with a vibrant nightlife, performances by famous musicians from Cairo and Beirut, songs satirizing contemporary events and personalities and partygoers dabbling in recreational drugs.

Jerusalem in the 1920s, it seems, was less the traditional backwater depicted in some accounts of the British Mandate, and more a city whose affluent cultural scene was a smaller version of that to be found in other cosmopolitan capitals in the region and across Europe.

As well as this unique insight into the leisure lives of the upper classes, Jawhariyyeh’s depictions of late Ottoman and Mandate Jerusalem give us eyewitness accounts of the diverse society destroyed by the establishment of the State of Israel.

Here, Muslims, Christians and Jews not only lived alongside one another, but participated in each other’s religious festivals and cultural celebrations, drawing no meaningful distinctions between one community and another.

According to these descriptions, the Jewish festival of Passover and Christian Easter were celebrated almost as one huge event in Jerusalem, with participants from the highest ranks of Muslim officials.

Before the United Nations voted in favor of the Patition Plan on November 29, 1947, the Arab Legion of Jordan attacked Jerusalem. Their forces blocked Jerusalem's roads and cut off the city's access to water. After bitter fighting, the Jewish Quarter of Jerusalem's Old City fell to the vastly superior arms and numbers of the Arab Legion. The surviving Jewish inhabitants fled to the "New City," the four-fifths of the capital that Israel successfully held.

The Old City, including the Jewish Quarter, officially fell to Jordan on May 27, 1948. Nearly twenty years later, during the 1967 Six-Day War, Israel's army liberated Jerusalem's Old City, finding the area completely neglected and virtually destroyed.

The following is photographic evidence of a sample of the destruction. All but one of the thirty five synagogues within the Old City were destroyed; those note completely devastated had been used as hen houses and stables filled with dung-heaps, garbage and carcasses. The revered Jewish graveyard on the Mount of Olives was in complete disarray with tens of thousands of tombstones broken into pieces to be used as building materials and large areas of the cemetery leveled to provide a short-cut to a new hotel. Hundreds of Torah scrolls and thousands of holy books had been plundered and burned to ashes.

No, not even close. Arabs have always hated us.
During the rise of Islam, the first encounters between Muslims and Jews resulted in persecution when Muhammad expelled or killed the Jewish tribes of Medina. In Moorish Spain, there was the 1066 Granada massacre, when more than 1,500 Jewish families, numbering 4,000 persons, fell in one day, and in Fez in 1033, when 6,000 Jews were killed. There were further massacres in Fez in 1276 and 1465.
Other mass murders of Jews in Arab lands occurred in Morocco in the 8th century, where whole communities were wiped out by Muslim ruler Idris I; North Africa in the 12th century, where the Almohads either forcibly converted or decimated several communities; Libya in 1785, where Ali Burzi Pasha murdered hundreds of Jews; Algiers, where Jews were massacred in 1805, 1815 and 1830 and Marrakesh, Morocco, where more than 300,000 Jews were murdered between 1864 and 1880.
The Damascus affair occurred in 1840, when an Italian monk and his servant disappeared in Damascus. Immediately following, a charge of ritual murder was brought against a large number of Jews in the city. All were found guilty. The consuls of England, France and Germany as well as Ottoman authorities, Christians, Muslims and Jews all played a great role in this affair. Following the Damascus affair, Pogroms spread through the Middle East and North Africa. Pogroms occurred in: Aleppo (1850, 1875), Damascus (1840, 1848, 1890), Beirut (1862, 1874), Dayr al-Qamar (1847), Jerusalem (1847), Cairo (1844, 1890, 1901-02), Mansura (1877), Alexandria (1870, 1882, 1901-07), Port Said (1903, 1908), Damanhur (1871, 1873, 1877, 1891), Istanbul (1870, 1874), Buyukdere (1864), Kuzguncuk (1866), Eyub (1868), Edirne (1872), Izmir (1872, 1874). There was a massacre of Jews in Baghdad in 1828. There was another massacre in Barfurush in 1867.
In 1839, in the eastern Persian city of Meshed, a mob burst into the Jewish Quarter, burned the synagogue, and destroyed the Torah scrolls. Known as the Allahdad incident. It was only by forcible conversion that a massacre was averted.

Because in the process the muslims destroyed much of the holy land. Like the Mount of Olives, Josephs tomb, the Temple mount, many of the early Christian and Jewish cemeteries and many Churches and synagogues. They are noted for their desecration of all non Islamic religious sites, and even threatened to destroy the Pyramids in Egypt two years ago.

OK, but all of that happened after the time that he was talking about.

NO it happened before, during and after as the records show. It is a direct command in the Koran to destroy all other religions outward appearance from Islamic controlled lands

You still have not refuted anything in my post,

You are shifting the timeline of events and confusing cause and affect.

Perhaps there is an element of nostalgia to Jawhariyyeh’s reminiscences of the earlier years of his life. Even allowing for this, there is a growing sense of darkness throughout the latter part of his memoirs, as political events — Zionist immigration and growing discrimination against the local population by the British Mandate authorities — start to impinge on everyday life.

Tinmore must be blind deaf and dumb. All the instances and history shown where Muslims have persecuted, tortured, and killed all non Muslims and especially Jews in Jerusalem, particularly in the 1800's and early 1900's, and he still shows us this dumb photo with an Arab musician and says "you haven't refuted anything". Ha ha ha. What a nutjob.

I shudder at the thought of what if Arabs actually did control Jerusalem today. I doubt there would be a single Jew or non Islamic structure left standing. Of course that's just the way Tinmore the Hamas spokesperson wants it. :cuckoo:

The fact does not alter the muslims destroyed much of the holy land before the 1948 war. They systematically dug up Jewish and Christian grave yards and piled the bones in heaps to make way for more muslim migration. The grave markers were used as paving stones or to line open sewers. The Jewishness of Jerusalem was being systematically destroyed so they could say "see no Jews ever lived here", and it is still going on today.

I have replied . Ever hear the term " Lying by Omission?" Anyone who reads without knowing the Racist AntiSemetic History of the Arabs gets the impression that Muslims and Jews have a peaceful History till 1948 and that is a lie iYour " post" doesn't mention how the Jordanians destroyed Jewish Holy Sites, Hebron and other Massive Killing . How did the Jews " destroy Jerusalem" ? By living? Your claim that everybody got along ( Rodney King) is also a lie .

Your " claim" that the Jews " destroyed Jerusalem" while ignoring the Facts it was the Arabs who destroyed anything regarding Jewish Heritage which obviously included Cemetaries ( Just proof that Jews existed there before 1948) who didn't follow " International Law" ( Which is a joke anyway) , failing to acknowledge that the Racist Hate of the Jewish People by the Arabs started Centuries before Israel was even thought of and your ridiculous " claim" that before the Jewish State Muslims, Jews, and Christians got along :cuckoo:

Any questions??? :D

By living? Your claim that everybody got along ( Rodney King) is also a lie .

till the mufti started spreading lies about the jews and incited riots in 1920, it had been more or less welcoming of jews, their development and investments, clearing of swamps and watering the desert, and flow of trade and economic growth. Ottoman and arabs invited the jews back to their ancestral homeland.
Back then there was more than enough land for everyone. Only 500,000 people in the region, 20% non-muslim in an area the size of Pennsylvania (75% of that went to Jordan). Today Pennsylvania has almost 13,000,000 people and at least 1/4% of the state land is farming. >>Today Israeli agriculture represents 2.5% of total GDP and 3.6% of exports. Israel produces 95% of its own food requirements,<< on 20% of the land. Israel today is roughly the size of New Jersey (population almost 9,000,000. 16% of land is agriculture). Half of Israel is desert. Between Israel and the PA the population is 11,000,000.
Palestinian Authority land is 63% agriculture, population 4,000,000, GDP $4 billion, area the size of Delaware (63% of land agriculture, 1,000,000 population, GDP $62 billion)

What he is keeping back from us is that his friends are already operating in Jerusalem. Maybe he thinks that when they take over completely, they will ask him to come back and become the mayor as a reward for all the good work he has done as their representative here in the U.S.

I have always lamented the destruction of the holy land by Israel.

Well Jillian, I see you are still giving out negative reps because you are too stupid to debate.

You have no posts on this thread. If you disagree with one of my post, say something.

The Zionist invasion started years before 1948.

What is your point?

" Zionist invasion?" The Jewish Religion was started there over 4000 years ago . There is enough proof despite the Arabs attempt to destroy all evidence . What is your perverted rationalization for that ? Atrocities like Hebron and many others happened to Jews who were native in the area. The Jews have as much right to their Homeland as you claim the Palestinians do . Nothing to do with Jerusalem

The native Jews had every right to be there, however, with mass immigration of Jews for the purpose of taking over the country along with divisive and discriminatory practices by Britain were the engine behind such massacres.

The point is the arab muslims also invaded Palestine many decades before the Jews returned at the command of the Ottomans. The land was empty of life apart from the Jews and Christians that lived there. The muslims stayed well away as the conditions were so poor and the work was tedious and backbreaking. The ones that did venture into the area stole the Jews farms and ran them into the ground before moving on. Places like Hebron were stolen many times by the muslims from the 7c.

By the way define what you mean by Zionist please, as you tend to use it as a profanity
