I think it depends where your visiting in Mexico and what your doing in Mexico. My wife and I visited Cancun and felt very safe with no issues. I have had family members and people I worked with who visited Mexico with no issues. Cancun, Porta Vallarta, Mexico City, Tijuana, Cabo San Lucas.

The cartels actually want American tourists and protect them, they bring money into the hotels at resorts they control.

I talked to hotel staff in Mexico and many said what doesn't get in the news is often times Americans who get killed in Mexico are doing things that get them in trouble. Doing drugs, selling drugs, smuggling drugs in and out of the country. I was assured if your in Mexico only for tourism, especially at tourist areas like Cancun, your well protected and safe.
