7.8 Earrthquake in Turkey (Tweeted videos linked below)

Here’s what you need to know about the earthquake.

GAZIANTEP, Turkey — At least 2,100 people have been killed in Turkey and Syria, where a powerful earthquake on Monday collapsed thousands of buildings and raised the specter of a new humanitarian disaster in a region already wracked by war, a refugee crisis and deep economic troubles.

The initial magnitude 7.8 earthquake hit at 4:17 a.m. local time, according to the United States Geological Survey, and was also felt in Cyprus, Egypt, Israel and Lebanon. Dozens of aftershocks, including an unusually strong 7.5 magnitude tremor, struck Turkey in the aftermath, the U.S.G.S. said.

The initial earthquake, centered near Gaziantep in south central Turkey, was the deadliest to hit the country in more than 20 years and was as strong as that of 1939, the most powerful ever recorded in Turkey. As search and rescue teams fanned out across the country, the Turkish authorities said at least 1,498 people had been killed.

When his family’s apartment building in Gaziantep started shaking, Serap Sari yelled, “Nobody move!” to his pregnant wife and three children. “I thought my house would be my grave,” he recalled.

About 700 people were also reported dead in northwestern Syria. The affected area stretches across several provinces and the front line between government-controlled areas on one side and areas under the control of the Turkish-backed opposition on another.

No electricity. No water. No heating. No bread. No medicine. A decade long war. And now an apocalyptic earthquake. The west must lift its sadistic sanctions on Syria and stop suffocating the Syrian people for political agendas. Syrians need to recover.

That's horrible and the worst part about it is that it was totally unexpected.

May they R.I.P

That quake was 10 times more powerful than the one I rode in '94, and I am certain Turkey and Syria don't have building codes on par with those in California. The people must have been, and with the aftershocks probably still are, terrified.

Here's to hoping they get the help they need.

How long before the Turkish government blames it on the Kurds?

If it happened in Palestine you can be sure they would be blaming Israel right away. I think they accused them of using birds to attack them or something odd in that realm of ridiculousness.

Human beings are peculiar. I try not to judge, but sometimes it's unavoidable.

Hey cult fucks….you need to come up with a bullshit grift to steal people’s money and claim you will stop earthquakes.

YOU ARE MISSING A HELL OF A MARKET.

You guys can do it. No more subterranian foundations, maybe.

Definitely send your money to Al Gore…he will stop earthquakes.

THE TURKEY EARTHQUAKES ARE TRUMP’S fault…we know, we know.

Here are key developments: Latest reported deaths 3,800, too early to know if that is close to being accurate. No one really knows yet.

  • In Turkey, at least 2,379 people were killed, according to the state-run Anadolu news agency, in addition to at least 13,293 injured, and more than 5,600 buildings were destroyed, the government said. “We do not know where the number of dead and injured can go,” said President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
  • In Syria, rescue workers used headlamps and flood lights to work throughout the night. More than 1,450 people were dead, according to the state health ministry and the White Helmets relief group, and thousands more were injured across the country. Many Syrian war refugees are also in the quake-stricken area of Turkey. The country has taken in 3.6 million Syrian refugees, more than any other country, according to the U.N. refugee agency, which runs one of its largest operations from Gaziantep.
  • Videos shared on social media from Turkey and across the border in Syria showed destroyed buildings and rescue crews searching through piles of rubble for survivors. Some people fled their homes in the rain and took shelter in cars.
  • Governments around the world quickly responded to Turkey’s request for international assistance, deploying rescue teams and offers of aid.
  • Earthquakes occur frequently in Turkey, which sits on fault lines. Recent quakes in the region have caused deadly landslides.

U.N. having trouble getting relief there.

Power cuts, blocked roads and other disruptions were complicating efforts by the United Nations to provide humanitarian relief on Monday for millions of refugees and displaced people in Turkey and Syria affected by Monday’s earthquakes.

Some 4.1 million displaced Syrians, mostly women and children, already rely on daily humanitarian aid for survival, and 2.7 million of them are in the northwestern part of Syria, near both Turkey’s border and the epicenter of the earthquake, according to the U.N.

“We are looking to mobilize emergency funds in the region,” said Stéphane Dujarric, a spokesman for the U.N. secretary general. “The earthquake is expected to disrupt aid operations in northwestern Syria, given the impact on roads, the supply chains and logistical facilities.”

Adding to the challenge, Turkey has taken in 3.6 million Syrian war refugees, the most of any country, and many are clustered along the border. In fact, Turkey hosts the largest number of refugees in the world, according to U.N. data.

In Syria, part of the relief effort falls in government territory and part in opposition-held territory. Aid to the government-held areas must be coordinated through the Syrian government in Damascus and it is not clear if the U.N. will receive permission to enter the opposition-held territories, Mr. Dujarric said.

Absolutely horrible! A real tragedy!

The buildings collapsing with people inside.... sleeping in the middle of the night.....thousands dead....what a nightmare!

This earthquake was huge! so much misery....:(

Pray for these people, this is an utter catastrophe.

People who live in buildings that are still standing are afraid to go back in them because they are too scared an aftershock may knock it down or that it is already compromised and may collapse.

There must be thousands trapped. One can live 3-7 days without water, based on temperature and fitness. The trapped need to be saved.

I am sure we will be sending search and rescure teams there.

God does not need $100B in weapons to destroy a nation…and he did it in 60 seconds.

The footage is devastating. It seems their buildings were not at all built to withstand this. Horrible.

Yes and no.

There were dozens of earthquakes, and the region still has not come to rest. There are still earthquakes happening.
Three 7.4 earthquakes release the enrgey of one 7.7 earthquake.
One 7.7 earthquake releases the energy of 60 Hiroshima bombs.

This region has been hit by multiple earthquakes, the biggest ones 7.8, 7.5, 6.7, 6.6.
Then there are othere parameters like depth of the epicenter.

So it is not all about build quality.

North-West Syria is pretty much fucked up: war-zone with no money, no state structures.

The chain of earthquakes (still ongoing) was extraordinary.

Syria has millions already relying on the U.N., and they probably have trouble keeping up in the best of times. Now these are the worst of times.
