Chicago public schools received $11.2 billion from local and federal funding and with a little over 325,000 students, this funding breaks out to be over $34,000 per student. Despite this, it's one of the worst performing school districts in the country. I'd say the residents keep voting for the mediocrity Vivek criticized, but this is flat out failure.

This is a scenario we continue to see in school districts all around the country.

Usually I would say that many issues make failing schools--and that's almost always the case. But given this is Chicago schools, yeah, it's a huge fail. The school district itself. Probably as rife with corruption as the city itself.

That’s because the liberal-run public schools spend a disproptionate amount of time on what they consider “social justice” - focused on white privilege, black oppression, diversity, etc. - instead of the basic academics that form the basis of a solid education and prepares students for further education.

There is also reluctance to hold back students who can’t master grade-level requirements, and they just get pushed into next grade. Liberals are too concerned it might otherwise hurt their self-esteem, blah blah.

We have devolved to Social Emotional Learning now. The poorer and more disadvantaged, the better. This means that people who run the education system think the best way out of poverty is not education, knowledge and skills--but staring at your belly button every day of your life and ruminating on how terrible your life is.
