Frankly, it was America's fault. They put the ship on the Egyptian coast, in the middle of a hot war, where the previous day, Israel was being shelled from that area. In the middle of a war area it makes perfect sense that Israel would think it's an Egyptian ship.

There seems to be things about this sheet that I don't understand, and may give some clues as to authenticity or not.

Unfortunately a number of error by the navy and the crew of the Liberty contributed to what happened.
Israel tried to get confirmation of a US ship in the area and the navy said there were none.
Disobeying the Captain orders, crew fired on Torpedo ships first.

Long list of mistakes, but this was not something that is only to blame on Israel.

Planes kept asking for confirmation to fire on the ship in question. Israel had been attacked and could not let a suspect ship get away to attack again.

This was a tragic case of misinformation and friendly fire. Both sides share responsibility.

This topic has been discussed many times before. Several US inquires found it was a mistake of identity.

Hopefully both side have learned from this.

The issue here is, does anyone have a reason to lie?

The US has a reason to lie, if it wanted to continue to support Israel, then it needed to lie, and Israel would need to lie, if what the OP said were true or even partially true.

Why is it then that "NSA transcript" STOPS as they approach for attack.. There is no confirmation of firing. No subsequent "Oh shit" moment when they overfly the vessel... THIS is why conspiracies linger. It is always the Govt providing a limited window into things that they COULD -- head off b4 they become full blown conspiracies.

Now chances are -- NSA didn't HAVE a spy plane. But it was the US Liberty itself that was doing action surveillance itself. Collections of Intel and Signals intercept. No other reason to position a vessel that close to the confrontation..

No reason for the Israelis to disrupt Signal Intel that was being collected by Americans. But MAYBE IDF was not let in on the mission..

NONE of this alleged conversation is in the NSA released document. NOR do any details of the strike appear in the CIA document in your link. NEITHER are very useful for "settling" this..

You don't have the ******* recordings. If they EXIST -- they are still classified. As of 2003, NSA was STILL denying FOIA requests for recordings from the Liberty (which they ACKNOWLEDGE had an "NSA compartment" on board. OR that other NSA intercepts existed. MAYBE the NSA transcript that CNelson provided is genuine. Comes from the NSA.Gov site -- but is limited to before the approach for the attack.

Problem is -- the people requesting FOIAs are asking the wrong questions. Recordings of the military action MAY have been done by any number of Intel agencies. Not just NSA.

Egyptian ships routinely disguised themselves. It was the fog of war and there was no reason the Israelis would expect an American ship to be in that area, especially during a war. As for a motive, you would have to do alot of mental gymnastics. Do you know how many soldiers are regularly killed by "friendly fire?"
