We have an Electoral College so that a few largely populated states don’t run our nation. We have something called “federalism” in the United States.

BoJo (Tories), by a significant margin, won a plurality of votes. Trump, by comparison, didn't even achieve that.

Both systems break the "One (Wo)Man, One Vote" principle that is the very foundation of democracy, which would require proportional representation (or a reasonably close approximation). As things stand, Democrats need 5%, better 7%, more votes than Republicans in order to win the presidency.

As you've seen, there is no rational argument available that would explain why a Californian vote should have less weight than a vote cast in other states. Enfranchising non-propertied, white men, blacks, and finally women, creates a trajectory towards proper representation. That path will take another step once the two main parties both realize they need to take that last step in order to compete. I would guess, once younger, less reactionary cohorts and a growing number of Latinos turn Texas more and more purple, and finally blue, even the GOP will realize that they need to broaden their base, since without Texas, and without Latino votes in significantly higher numbers, they are going to be a structural minority party. That's probably when even the GOP might suddenly discover the virtues of the "One (Wo)Man, One Vote" principle, and of proportional representation. Before that, naw, the party of White Supremacy will submerge every principled argument under a tsunami of sanctimony and mendacity, as is their habit.
