The data cover Aug. 16 to Aug. 17, 2012 and were taken by the Rover Environmental Monitoring Station. Ground temperatures vary from as high as 37 degrees Fahrenheit (3 degrees Celsius) to as low as minus 131.8 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 91 degrees Celsius), showing large temperature oscillations from day to night. Air temperatures vary from as high as 28 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 2 degrees Celsius) to as low as minus 103 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 75 degrees Celsius), indicating, as expected, variations in air temperatures are less extreme than ground temperature variations.

There's a graph for the summer from 0-200sol on mars that the day time temperature was 0-32f every day. Mars Science Laboratory: Rover Environmental Monitoring Station (REMS)

Mars isn't as extreme as some believe. There's temperature data supporting 50-60f.

Forgive me for my ignorance but isn't this a bit like arctic ice melt. One year we have a record ice melt then the next year tends back towards the norm. The overall trend is still decreasing ice volumes.

As such after a record hot year in the US 2012 statistically wouldn't we expect a narrowing of cold and hot extremes in the following year ?

In Australia we have just experienced our hottest 12 months ever unless a strong El Niño cuts in it is very likely that 2014 will be cooler than 2013 tending towards the norm. Unfortunately the overall trend is still heading up.

According to the Curiosity Rover, Mars reached a maximum temperature of -29 C on Tuesday, a temperature Winnipeg only reached shortly before 3 p.m.
