Hybrid cars have the hybrid battery plus the regular old 12 V battery.

In a non hybrid system, the gas engine recharges the 12 V battery.

But in a hybrid, the gas engine runs only part time.

So, how is the 12 V battery recharged in a hybrid system? Does the gas engine turn on extra time, in order to recharge it?

If you jump start on the 12 V batter, does the gas engine charge it up good so that you don't need to jump start again, even if it is a hybrid system?

These questions are about the Toyota Prius hybrid, but can be asked generally too.

Thanks for your advice!

When the car is going downhill, the batteries of the car are charging, when you apply the brakes the car batteries are charging, when you accelerate the car batteries are charging, the only time you are not charging batteries is when you are idle, or running steady for a few miles. The 12 volt if i am not mistaken gets bleed off voltage to keep it at full.

Why is a 12 volt battery needed in a Toyota Hybrid? (elearnaid.com)
Once the high voltage battery system is turned on a high voltage to 12 volt converter turns on that produces about 14 volts. At this voltage the sealed 12 volt battery charges and will not over charge but it is a slower charge rate than you might be used to.

The Prius mileage can be up to over 50 mpg, while the Lexus 350h gets up to 35mpg, and my Toyota Highlander gets 27mpg but seats 7.. The cool car though is the Lexus CT200 hybrid gets around 48 mpg, but is a nice looking car. They dont make it anymore, but if gas prices necessarily skyrocket again, i bet it will be on the assembly line again.
Used can be around $14,000

The Prius, like all gasoline engines, has a 12V battery for starting, and an alternator for charging the 12V battery. Whenever the engine runs, the 12V battery is charging. If you have to jump start it, once the engine's running, it should be left running long enough to recharge the starting battery.
