The idea that they should be taxed at the same rate would create an even wider gap in wealth. Besides, conservatives are always hung up on the progressive rates of the federal income taxes. The rates of most other taxes are flat rates. The Fed is progressive to moderate the overall tax burden of the lower income. Without it, literally half the population could be on welfare.
