Your timing is exquisite, Mr. Norquist

Really? Were rocks involved?

Remember when all the Republican candidates said they wouldn't even raise taxes $1 even if it meant that there would be $10 in spending cuts? Yeeeeaaaaah. That was because they signed Grover's pledge.

Wrong! That was because the $1 increase in taxes would happen and not a dime in spending cuts would ever happen. The Republicans do learn from history.

The congressional oath office states "that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter"

Any congress person who has taken the Norquist oath is in violation of their congressional oath and should be removed from office.

Harry Reid took the Congressional oath and has refused to pass a budget for three years. I agree that he is in violation of his oath and should be removed from office.

Making a pledge to NOT raise taxes is not a violation of the congressional oath. Allowing the US to have a deficit of over a trillion dollars for three years in a row comes close.

you should think about not licking the ass of a guy who wants our government dead

By not passing a budget for the last three years, Harry Rein had almost killed our government.

Uh-huh. :) And the Republicans weren't at all the Party of Obstruction.

I like your kool-aid, but there is a bitter under taste.

The Republicans in the House have passed budgets and sent them to the Senate where they were not even brought to the floor by the Senate Majority Leader for a vote. That is what obstruction is!

You weren't alive last summer, I take it. When the budget ceiling almost collapsed, despite the fact everybody hated Obama because he just kept giving more and more away. They STILL wouldn't budge.

Yes it is. They pledged allegiance to someone that is hellbent on destroying the government.

omg,

what you don't GET, is US TAXPAYERS can't SUPPORT this bloated government ANYMORE.. but that won't stop you all from asking for more and more in the way of taxation off the backs of the working people in this country

it's kinda sick if you ask me

Youve had a decade of lower taxes and that's gotten us larger and larger deficits. Now you want to blame the govt or destroy the social Saftey net until deficits don't exist anymore?

In July 1863, during the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln and Congress created the office of Commissioner of Internal Revenue and enacted a temporary income tax to pay war expenses (see Revenue Act of 1862). The position of Commissioner exists today as the head of the Internal Revenue Service.
The Revenue Act of 1862 was passed as an emergency and temporary war-time tax. It copied a relatively new British system of income taxation, instead of trade and property taxation. The first income tax was passed in 1861:

  • The initial rate was 3% on income over $800, which exempted most wage-earners.
  • In 1862 the rate was 3% on income between $600 and $10,000, and 5% on income over $10,000.
  • In 1864 the rate was 5% on income between $600 and $5,000; 7.5% on income $5,000–$10,000; and 10% on income $10,000 and above.
By the end of the war, 10% of Union households had paid some form of income tax, and the Union raised 21% of its war revenue through income taxes.

So you want taxes abolished.

Funny the Republicans have never done that, in all their time in charge.

I'd be happy if the majority of Government was abolished.
They were never meant to have the power they've granted themselves.

In your next sentence, why couldn't we substitute "government" or "politicians" in place of "republicans"?
Comes across as a little dishonest when the democrats have never done it, either.....

Your point?

Betty was singing the praises of a 90% tax rate.
I was merely pointing out that income taxes, in general, was meant to be temporary and never above 10%

If you retards want to give your favorite Uncle 90% of your pay, simply make the checks payable to the Dept. of Treasury.
No one is stopping you.

What did he give away? What planet are you on? Liberals are notorious for saying they'll cut spending 30 years from now, if we just get tax increases now. Sorry Charlie Brown learned Lucy's trick on that one.

I like this one. hmmmm, those numbers grow after Pelosi gets in and skyrocket after Obama, so what about the deficit?

The Congressional oath doesn't say you can't "destroy" (cut spending, in other words) the government. It only says you must faithfully execute the laws of the United States. The law requires the Senate to pass a budget.

Norquist meets privately with GOP to reinforce anti-tax pledge - latimes.com

And some Republicans have grown weary of the pledge -- saying they want more options in handling the nation's tough budgetary matters.

Even before Norquist, the feisty president of Americans for Tax Reform, set foot on the Hill on Thursday, a top Democrat, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada, offered a prebuttal to the visit.

"All of you should know that the most powerful man in Washington will be visiting Congress this coming Thursday, and it's not Bryce Harper," Reid said earlier in the week, invoking the Washington Nationals' new star slugger, a fellow Nevadan.

"It's Grover Norquist," Reid said. "Grover Norquist is the only Republican leader who can truthfully say he has the entire Republican Party in the palm of his hand. ... So if you want to know what the Republican position is on any of the enormous economic challenges facing this country, don't waste your time asking Governor Romney, Speaker Boehner or Senator McConnell. Just ask Grover."

Reid was referring to the GOP leaders -- Mitt Romney, the presumed Republican presidential nominee, House Speaker John A. Boehner and Sen. Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, the minority leader.

Norquist's meeting with a gathering of House Republicans was private.

Private, huh? I wonder why.

A republican might go off message and say something factual or truthful.

What’s troubling, of course, is that such a significant percentage of the Federal Legislative Branch is subject to the harmful agenda of the radical right. And these elected officials represent the fear, hate and ignorance of the voters who support them.

All that and we still had a record deficit. Tax cuts worked so great that we ended up in a recession. Nevermind the fact that the wars were kept off the books. I'll say it again, we've had tax cuts for over a decade and we now have the largest deficit ever. While pretending that the deficit is the most important issue, repubs refuse to address the "most important" by saying everthing is on the table. They say "this is super important, but not enough to raise taxes". See how important it is?

What is this "harmful agenda" of the "radical right," removing parasites from the government tit?

To the parasite, removing them IS the harmful agenda.
