The picture on the LEFT is the first image of a black hole revealed by scientists earlier today.

It's located over 50 million light years away in the galaxy M87, has a diameter of nearly 38 billion kilometers, spins clockwise, and checks in at a mass of over 7.22 billion times that of our sun.

Meanwhile back here on planet Earth, people are still debating whether or not the picture on the RIGHT is a human being.

Oh, you said black Hole, I thought you said black Hoe...

Maybe, maybe not. I remember when they pronounced martian germs in a meteorite. Just a reminder that a lightyear is the distance light travels in a year of earth time. Now they are talking about 50 million?

Nope, looks like a chicken to me.
Yes, definitely a chicken.

What is being published is not actually the black hole because by definition a black hole can emit no light thus it can not be photographed. However, matter that is near a black hole can emit light in response to the black hole's gravity. I think this what is being photographed.

Wow.

Thanks for linking two totally irrelevant items!

It's totally spectacular. Do you realize that all of physics today is based Einsteins theories?

They keep questioning him and then something like this happens. Einstein accidentally discovered the black hole when he did his break down thesis on the laws of gravity. it was there in his equations but another physicist picked up on and finished the equations through to the conclusion that black holes must exist. What's even more hilarious is that Einstein argued with the guy for a while....Even though the foundation mathematics was authored by Einstein himself.

I am pro choice when it comes to black holes

Im pretty sure its a image derived from other sources than film or digital images

You are correct. There is no way you could take a picture of it using an optical telescope and camera. It is 53 million light years from the earth which means what we are seeing now occurred 53 million years ago when our ancestors were swinging through the trees. The energy bands we see go out only 6 light years from the blackhole.

An event horizon telescope was used to capture the data which consist of an array of eight ground-based radio telescopes scatter around the earth. What you are actually seeing is an image created by mapping the electromagnetic energy around the blackhole. The data was gathered in 2017 and over 200 researchers have been analyzing the data for over a year and half. According to their calculations, the mass of the black hole is over 6 billion times the mass of our sun and is about the size of our solar system.
Simply incredible!

Millions anxiously awaited the first photograph of an actual black hole...…..and...…..it's a hole that's black. I don't know what else they were expecting to see.

If you were an avid fan of astronomy
you would realize that up until now black holes were always a matter of theory and speculation. There was some evidence that they existed but it was all circumstantial.

The debate has been raging for the past seventy years ever since Einstein predicted their existence. This photograph today is one more than vindication of Einstein's brilliance.

Of course it's not a typical photograph taken with an optical camera. However the end result is every bit the photograph they claim it to be and then some.

Every detail of that picture fits the description of a black hole such as Einstein imagined it to be some 70 to 80 years ago in his mathematical musings.

The first black hole was discovered in 1971 and there have been a number of others discovered since then. What is remarkable about this black hole is the amount of data gathered, the detail mapping of electromagnetic radiation to the vision spectrum, and also it's size and mass.

Not discovered.... Detected and assumed.
Even at that there have always been naysayers who insisted that Einstein was incorrect....though even Einstein doubted that they could exist ironically.

This is the first time irrefutable proof has been offered. Though arguably any reasonable scientist would understand from the evidence that it has always been irrefutable.
