Hey all,
I bought a brand new house 2 months ago and want some advice
on landscaping the back yard. Colorado is really dry and the ground
is hard as hell. Anyway, would like to put in a deck, maybe a guesthouse
with a hot tub. So with this arid climate what's a good way to fill the rest of
the space, I know rocks.... that's pretty much every house in Colorado. Want something different, got time to save money and plan. Any ideas???

Its really dry here as well, but we have grass and trees in our back yard. With a sprinkler system it works rather well. In one corner of the yard we do have several small evergreen trees with bark boardered with railroad ties, that takes up quite a bit of room.

Are you going to pour a pad for the hot tub? We did it ourselves with pavers, turned out nice.

Cacti......
I don't know if the wife will go for that one.

Lots of kinds to chose from and it may surpise you. Many parts of Colorado are high desert country. You may also try yucca varieties and check with your local governmental land agencies. They offer free advice !

Oh Joker! Just tell the wife..."You take care of the inside Dear"
I'll do the outside...and then putter..it's an art...that takes yrs to learn.

That might be a good thing, I don't want any Girly stuff in the yard!

Any Girly stuff!!! and what exactly do you consider Girly stuff? Please explain!

Look around - there are native plants which can survive the crap soil...find examples of those, and place them in the yard - also, working a large water feature can take up room, yet provide a GREAT atmosphere, along with soothing sounds, etc.

Email some pics of your yard; I'll have my wife look and offer suggestions.

Sure...see ya get those cider blocks out there now...so she gets used to em...You can say "there for a project" dear.
Then when ya have that car ya just have to keep..you can say, "see dear I was thinking ahead". Pretty smart, Huh? And by the way "how's the inside of the house going for ya"? Sweetie.

D, I'll have to take some tonight.

K, Girly Stuff in the Yard:

Plastic or ceramic knomes
Bird baths
Porcellan frogs
Fruity looking Birdhouses
Any tool with a landscape painted on it
Fairy People

That kinda stuff.

P the inside of the house belongs to the wife as you said.
Besides that is where the kitchen is. Just Kidding!!!
I give her free reign on everything EXCEPT the Garage and my bathroom.
We have a guest bathroom she can doll up, no sense in ruining both of them.

Uh OH---the whole theme is in doubt here---good luck !!

If stuff wont grow and you want a "guy's" back yard, you need a few things:

Styrofoam archery deer/bear target (even if you dont practice archery)
an old car/motorcycle engine covered with a silver tarp
a dilapidated dog house (even if you have no dog)
one pile of rocks (any size) with a few broken bricks mixed in
a few pieces of warped and weathered plywood scattered around for effect.
one ancient rusted, rooftop TV antenna (not connected of course)

A busted ass camper on blocks,
and a 350 small block.....Just in case!

If you REALL want a guys back yard...

Install a putting Green, but instead of a flag for the hole, make it a goal post, which could also double as a stripper-pole. Add a wetbar, Weber Grill...Fridge...hammock...and hire a couple hot 'gardeners' to jump on your 8' Trampoline.

:)

Actually if it's done in good taste and not FLOODING my yard,
I could do SOME girly things. I don't want a yard full of this.
