I wish I could be as optimistic as the good people of the Journal's editorial board when interpreting Barack Obama's Sunday morning (Sept. 7) comments as a rejection of tax hikes in light of a recession ("ObamaTax 3.0," Review & Outlook, Sept. 9). In parsing his "Obamaspeak," though, you fail to account for the fact that Sen. Obama has couched his tax hikes as "tax cuts" all along, hence his five "nos" to George Stephanopoulos, followed by "I'm going to go through with my tax cuts." Contrary to his possessive form, Sen. Obama does not have, nor has he ever had, an element of tax cuts in his plan in any way shape or form. As the Journal's Kimberley Strassel pointed out Aug. 29, Sen. Obama has been wont to describe tax hikes as cuts simply because he creates a huge new system of entitlements in the form of refundable tax credits. I think you give Sen. Obama too much credit for rejecting tax hikes. He is simply restating his plan in the same misleading terms.
