No, this story did not happen that I know of. The example provided by el midgetron above is very similar, though.

But even more similar stories are really happening, right now.

The only difference is that instead of "for whatever reason," the parent claims that the child in question actually WANTS to be a girl, and therefore they should be allowed to do everything that the parents in my hypothetical story do. And they are not only allowed to do it, they are praised for doing it. HBO does documentaries about how awesome they are to do it. Anyone who does not agree with it is called "transphobic" and accused of hating "trans kids."

That's it. A claim by a parent who by any standard is mentally ill is all it takes to convert a clear case of mental abuse into a virtue, according to our mainstream media.
